. today was a beautiful day .

September 8, 2011

Today was a beautiful day…

The kind of day where having a hot breakfast makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but you do so anyways because… well… that’s just how you like it…

. – . – . – .

The kind of day where working out in a gym would be a crime, so you take your run outside…

… only to almost die on the stairs that were sadistically placed along your route…

. – . – . – .

The kind of day where afternoon eats and treats have to be cool and sweet…

Tofu protein pudding, made with a frozen banana and chia seeds.

Greek yogurt – Frozen chocolate muffin – Banana – Almond butter.

Cool, crisp salad beast.

Vanilla ice cream with a crumbled cone and chocolate sprinkles.

Frozen banana with almond butter and chocolate muffin crumbs.

. – . – . – .

The kind of day where the thought of a savory dinner sends your appetite running for the hills, and the only thing that sounds appealing is a grown-up twist on a childhood favorite…

Greek yogurt (buried) – Blueberries – Cereal – Trail mix.

. – . – . – .

The kind of day where you don’t think about eating too much sugar or not enough protein.

The kind of day where your mind is completely free.

The kind of day that wouldn’t have been possible at this time last year.

Yes, today was a beautiful day 😀

. – . – . – .

Do you struggle with feeling like you have to balance your eats on a daily basis? It’s an issue that’s plagued me for a long time. Make sure to get so much of this, not too much of that… but I’m finally starting to look at the bigger picture instead of analyzing things over a 24-hour time frame.

Are you a fan of cereal for dinner? It’s something that I used to do on a regular basis, and I’m thinking that it’s going to start making an appearance much more often.

YES. Thank you for representing those of us in the cereal for dinner party 😉 I celebrated last night with some crispy brown rice cereal and it was perfectamundo!

I’m definitely one who tries to eat a balance diet, but I agree– it’s better to think of things over a long-term time scale rather than just over the span of 24 hours. This way it isn’t as disheartening when you let yourself indulge in that chocolate cake or DQ blizzard (in my case 😉 )

There are times when I feel like I need more balance in my daily eats, but like you said, I try to look at the bigger picture. I don’t feel like I eat unhealthily. I know that I get nutrients that my body needs. I eat what I LIKE. That is becoming more and more apparent to me lately. Not eating this or that because I feel like I SHOULD, but eating what I WANT and what my mind and body are telling me that I want. & it’s not very often that I eat cereal for dinner. But there are those days when I just don’t know what I want, and cereal is always a great backup 🙂

I wish it were a gorgeous day here! All your foods look so good. I took my run outside the other morning and loved it
I’m trying to avoid too much of this not enough of that. I want to just eat what i want not what I’m “supposed” to have

What a wonderful post 🙂 So glad you had such a marvelous day! I’m diggin your dinner, cereal for dinner brings back some great childhood memories for me. My parents and I would always feel like such rebels haha
I’m still a bit plagued by macros, but only to make sure I’m getting what I need on workout days. Thank heavens it’s not like I used to be during my ED…talk about obsessive and jacked up eww
    Love ya girl! 🙂

  7. September 8, 2011 5:45 pm

Cereal for dinner is totally acceptable 🙂

And I eat a hot breakfast no matter what the temp. I just need something warm in the morning!

  8. September 8, 2011 5:45 pm

Cereal is sooooo not a dinner.

    Cereal is a snack only.

Meals must be cooked. It is a law. That I made up.

Don’t worry, it only applies to me. 🙂

I love all breakfast foods, so occasionally they make the meal plan for dinner! My fiance eats a bowl of cereal almost everynight before bed!
I tend to balance my eats during the week because I plan my meals the night before and pack them all for work. I’m more lax about it on the weekends.

  10. September 8, 2011 5:51 pm

I’m a fan of cereal ANYTIME.

Please share the sunshine! It’s been so dark and rainy here 😦

    Peanut free?

    • September 8, 2011 8:29 pm

😯 I didn’t know these were peanut free! I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen those particular squares, but I DO recall coming across their gelatos and sorbets. I’ll have to take a closer look the next time I’m in the store!

Cereal for dinner is the best! Loved this post! I missed your them! Glad their back 🙂

  12. September 8, 2011 6:00 pm

I could eat cereal all the time! I actually had a little baggie as a snack today and I was eating it in front my a student.. she could not for the life of her understand how I could be eating cereal at 2pm because cereal is a breakfast food. It was too cute@

  13. September 8, 2011 6:02 pm

Your running route is so beautiful! And I love this post 🙂 Send some of that sunshine my way though, please. Today I could have sworn it was fall. So damp and chilly.
And I’m definitely a fan of cereal for breakfast. Whenever my mom sees me doing it I think she gets a little worried about me or something, though, lol. My rationale is that I’ll eat what I’m craving and if it turns out to not be enough, well, I’ll just eat again. I don’t see a problem in that!

As for feeling the need to balance? Well…yes and no. I mean, I’m an active person…I need to make sure I’m eating well enough to support long days and not make me feel run-down. I’m not about to worry if I have one day of “unbalanced” eating, and I never count grams anyways, but I do try and make sure I’m staying in-tune to how I feel, if that makes sense?

  14. September 8, 2011 6:04 pm

Love the banana chia seed combo. Haven’t done it with tofu. But just ADORE tofu puddings and LIVED on them during part of college. Now I use stevia for sweetener but so low calorie, full of protein and just awesome!

Once again( like a gazillion times before!) I feel I could have written this post.
I had cereal for dinner TONIGHT, I had a slight niggling guilt cos its not proper dinnery food, sweet, not all that high in protein ,blah blah blah…but its friggin delicious and ill do it again 🙂

I do try and balance my eats to make sure I’m getting a good amount of nutrients- but I don’t obsess over it.
I tried your almond butter frosting recipe for 1st time today- holy freakin yum is all have to say to that.
Glad you had a beautiful day and thanks for sharing your beeeauuutiful piccies.

  18. September 8, 2011 6:17 pm

Yes there are many days where I seem to fret over not getting enough veggies, enough protein, too many sweets and treats, etc. But I’m getting to a point where I do the best I can and if I don’t eat any veggies it is ok. I’ll get in plenty at some point!

Awh, this was lovely ❤ It almost made the dreary, cold day we experience in my neck of the woods seem a little better 😉 (Seriously – WHEN did the rest of summer decide to go AWOL on me??!)

I definitely still feel the need to try to get a proper balance of foods in my daily diet – I don't think I'm as obsessive about it as I was during my darker days, though. I don't think I've ever had cereal for dinner (oats is a different story all together!), but it sounds like a BRILLIANT idea! 😉

  20. September 8, 2011 6:20 pm

I usually try to get my veggies in, but if I don’t – oh well. I will balanceit out eventually!

  21. September 8, 2011 6:26 pm

The day feels weird to me if I don’t have vegetables in it! But I think it’s starting to feel weird to me if I don’t have cereal, too… it’s really a separate food group, you know! 😉

    ❤ ❤

  22. September 8, 2011 6:38 pm

I would kill for this kind of balance, and I think I’m getting closer to it every day! I find that I’m really good at seeing the bigger picture, but I hardly ever look at it. It’s very weird. More and more I’m letting go, and loving it.
Weather-wise, today was a beautiful day. The forecast told me to expect rain all day, but there wasn’t a single drop 🙂

  23. September 8, 2011 6:38 pm

I have been craving breakfast for all my meals. Maybe it’s in the air? I am totally ok with cereal for dinner and oops, have been doing it lately too.

I am jealous of your weather. Still 100 degrees here. It NEEDS to cool down or I am going to go crazy. ♥

I’m happy to hear that someone had a beautiful day… mine was very dreary, mostly because of the inches of rain we’ve had over the past few days.

And I still really struggle with balancing my food. I tend to cut myself short on fats and proteins while mandating that I eat lots and lots of fruit and vegetables. And you can forget about eating cereal–or any grain–as the main component of any meal.

  25. September 8, 2011 6:43 pm

Such gorgeous food for such a gorgeous day, yum!

  26. September 8, 2011 6:46 pm

Cereal for dinner is sometimes the only thing that sounds good :D. But, I usually eat cereal for my evening snack so it doesn’t often show it’s face for dinner as well. And I definitely can struggle with feeling like I’ve had balanced eats- especially when I don’t get “enough” veggies in throughout the day. I try not to worry too much though and just get back on track the next day.

Your day sounds amazing. I’m 16 and just recently recovering from my own episode of disordered eating (I hate calling it what it really is) and am trying to be positive and non-obsessive about the things I eat. I used to eat only fruit and I sort of developed an addiction to it and everyday I would eat fruit, fruit, fruit. After losing my period I realize that I really am unhealthy and need to gain weight (although I totally rather not). Anyway I;m proud of myself because I’ve finally started eating yogurt, Luna bars, and….peanut butter! Oh man I love peanut butter. I know what it feels like to be afraid to go out because you might not be able to find something healthy to eat or out of fear of being offered junk food. I’m not too comfortable with my new self but I guess I’ll have to get used to it.

  28. September 8, 2011 7:18 pm

Such a perfect day! And those stairs…yeah, I would have busted my butt. No doubt about it.

  29. September 8, 2011 7:22 pm

    I love beautiful days 🙂

Sometimes I feel like I have to have my eats all balanced, like x% protein, y% carbs, and z% fat, but honestly, thats just too much math. I have a super tough calculus course this semester to deal with numbers; eating is just art.

  30. September 8, 2011 7:27 pm

I used to be a fan of cereal for dinner, but now that I eat it for breakfast practically everyday, I save it for morning!

I also used to be really strict about balancing out my meals, but not so much anymore. I generally feel better when I get a healthy balance, but I don’t really do it consciously. Certain days I get more of a balance than I do on other days. It all evens out in time! Deliciousness counts more than balance, as far as I’m concerned. I just want to enjoy what I’m eating!

  31. September 8, 2011 7:30 pm

Dude it’s been nothing but RAIN and grey skies here for like 5 days straight. I’m going CRAZY! Please share some of that amazing weather, and while you’re at it, you can send me some of those snacks too 😉

  32. September 8, 2011 7:32 pm

I’m so glad you had a beautiful day today! Today was a day where my bag was to heavy, and my professor didn’t show up, and I spent 4 hours commuting…and I’m ready to hit the hay. The good news is tomorrow is another day, and I will make it a beautiful day!

I tend to try and eat balanced, but somedays I just screw it and go for what I’m craving 🙂 I’ve never had cereal for dinner, but your combo looks delicious!!

  33. September 8, 2011 7:41 pm

We make “breakfast night” most Wednesdays, recently we’ve fallen off the bandwagon though :C
It’s never cereal though, much to my chagrin.

I used to worry about all the macronutrients, like “OMG I DIDN’T GET ENOUGH PROTEIN” but I wouldn’t mind I had like only 5% of my daily fat intake for the day…and 150% of carbs and or protein.

So now I just eat what I want when I want 🙂

Would you mind sending some of that gorgeous weather down this way to rain city? Please and thank you! ❤

  44. September 8, 2011 10:10 pm

Sweet cold dinners are always a win for me. Even better when it is hot but I don’t mind having this for dinner in the middle of the winter either 🙂 . And balance? I try to find beauty in each day, but those days when everything is beautiful and it just screams at you – life is awesome- are fabulous day for sure 😀 I don’t do the cereal for dinner thing often since it doesn’t fill me up, but cereal after dinner always! I don’t worry about macros, my body is pretty smart and craves a variety and pretty balanced stuff in general… it doesn’t usually steer me wrong and I totally agree with the whole general balance thing rather then each day or meal needing to be a certain way.

    • September 9, 2011 9:34 am

I was always worried that cereal wouldn’t fill me up either, which is why I avoided having it for meals for so long, but as long as I beef it up with yogurt, trail mix, and fruit, it seems to hold me over perfectly 😀

  46. September 8, 2011 10:17 pm

What a beautiful view!! Im always thinking about what im eating. ThenI think that if my friends dont think about what they are eating, and they are healthy, then why should I have to think about it? I love a mix of cereal and yogurt right before bed, sends me right to sleep 🙂

  47. September 8, 2011 10:18 pm

Gah, it drives me crazy when my dad and sister are like this meal needs more protein. Blah blah, just eat what your body craves and everything will work itself out!

  48. September 8, 2011 10:35 pm

Your running pictures have made me homesick! I am originally from the prairies, now living in the coast.

    Canada is so beautiful!

  49. September 8, 2011 11:21 pm

This post made me smile SO much! You deserve this freedom and happiness, and Im so glad you have found it!
The run outside looks beautiful, and your day was filled with delicious eats!!
Oh yea, jeg think a lot about how to balance everything, and sometimes (errr, oki, all the time), it takes over my life! But it is something Im working on! I want LIFE! Not perfect meals!

Im not a big cereal fan! BUT, yesterday I had oatmeal for dinner 😀 I cant remember last time! Since you know, dinner must be “dinner food” and all that crap! But after 16 hours at work, all I wanted was hot oatmeal. Im so happy that somethings are getting easier for me with food! I think Im just so SICK of always needing to fill up on nut butters at the end of the day. And I much rather eat yummy things all through the day, have energy and be happpy, and not needing to overeat later 🙂

  50. September 8, 2011 11:22 pm

I just realized that I wrote “jeg” inwsted of “I” :O Haha.. to tired, so I mix up norwegian and english 😛

  51. September 8, 2011 11:40 pm

I love cereal for dinner 🙂 Though sometimes it leaves me wanting 5 bowls, maybe not enough protein? trailmix is a great idea!

  52. September 8, 2011 11:46 pm

Great post! I used to be so anal about making sure I ate enough protein, all my meals had veggies and so attitude (thank goodness) is a lot more relaxed now, it’s all about the big picture! The only veggie in last night’s dinner was a few pieces of rocket and believe it or not, i’m still living! Shocker, eh!

  53. September 8, 2011 11:48 pm

Gosh, I’m so jelous of your good weather. It’s been nothing but rain, rain and more rain over here.

I also focus on trying to get foods high in calcium throughout the day because I have osteoporosis. But otherwise, I’m not too bothered about not having enough veggies and living on lots of sweet stuff because it’s what I like 🙂
And as for cereal..well..I could LIVE on cereal hehe!! 😛

I wish our weather was as beautiful as yours! It was rainy and dreary yesterday, which makes for not so great moods. Ahhh! I missed you while you were on your trip! And AHHHHHHH this looks so beautiful! I wish I had easy access to nature. Boo. I’m not usually a fan, but you’ve got me wanting to go outside! Well, real outside, you know? Not like… the street. With cars. THAT HIT YOU! Ugh.

Eeeeeep. I’m totally putting off going to class today. Just shoveled down some oatmeal, yeah. Nom.

Ohhh yes. Cereal for dinner. I like it, but now I’m bigger on oats! But I distinctly remember getting strangely excited my whole life when I didn’t like what my mom’d prepared for supper and (after I had tried her stuff, of course) was allowed cereal to fill my belly for the night. Cereal for dinner is ALWAYS okay 🙂 I’ve definitely struggled with ‘balancing my eats’ before but I’ve realised that in the scope of things it all evens out; one day I’ll eat bread, butter, and cheese three times then I’ll be so sick of it that the next day I’ll be having a humongous salad, and other less bready-buttery-cheesy things.

Drool- worthy meals, as usual. Glad it was a beautiful day- there’s nothing like running al fresco! 🙂

That boardwalk looks like such a gorgeous place to run! I hear you on the stairs though. My campus is full of stairs and hills, so it makes it so hard to run though!

YES! I can sometimes be really obsessive about making sure my eats are balanced. It’s been driving me crazy lately, so it’s something I’m trying to let go of. So what if I have yogurt 3x in one day? 😛

Like you, I struggle a lot too. But, once I remind myself it’s life and to just live it, I usually stop being to hard on myself/worrying.

And yes. Cereal for breakfast is a favorite of mine! Something about the room temperate crunchy cereal and cold almond milk. It’s love.

All these eats look so beautiful! Haha.
I know what you mean about having a nice warm breakfast on a sunny day just cause that’s the way you like it. I always feel good when I have a warm bowl of craisin oatmeal in the morning 🙂

I swear you can READ MY MIND!! I was just thinking about this today, about when someone mentioned how much sugar I eat…yeah sure I do, but so what?! I feel GREAT eating the way I do. And I love me some sugar 😉

And seriously what a BEAUTIFUL day and post!! Love it, and wow your running route looks GORGEOUS!! Fancy swapping sometime? Actually, I think I’ll just join ya instead! 🙂

    Beautiful post 🙂

I no longer care about whether I’m getting enough of this or enough of that. Surely if I wasn’t getting enough of something, my body would let me know. Like this morning I had cereal for breakfast but I know that if there was something I was missing from that meal, I’ll be craving it at my next meal. Body’s are good like that 😛

I tend to crave savoury foods for dinner but I know that if I really was craving cereal for dinner I would have no problem with listening to said craving.
