. stuck on you .

August 13, 2011

Nothing like starting off the weekend with a big bowl of burnt oatmeal for breakfast…

… or, you know, not 😯

Let’s try that again…

Muuuuuch better. Sure, I could have just thrown together a quick bowl of cereal for breakfast and saved myself the extra trouble, but how could I say no to a face like this?

I couldn’t.

And I’m glad I didn’t because, for whatever reason, this morning’s bowl tasted extra delicious…

Swoon-tastic.

But don’t fret – I’m not hatin’ on cereal here. For me, it’s just more of a lunch time food…

… as well as a perfect snack time food…

Β

Although, lately I’ve been too busy pimpin’ my rides rice cakes to think about snacking on cereal…

What can I say? When I like something, I reallyΒ like something, and I eat a lot of said something before moving on to something else.

Ya follow? πŸ˜‰ If not, I don’t blame you. What I’m trying to say is that I get stuck on certain foods and end up eating a lot of them, before I tire of them and get stuck on something else.

This has been the story of my life for… err… my entire life. I distinctly remember going through a Pop Tarts phase. A Mac&Cheese phase. A Mini Wheats phase. An Eggo waffle phase. A Goldfish cracker phase. A turkey sandwich phase. A… well, let’s just say there have been a lot of phases.

Some of my current obsessions? (besides oats and rice cakes, of course)…

Chocolate pudding spiked with cocoa powder, then topped with almond butter.

Grape kombucha… dare I say I’m starting to love it more than Trilogy?

Sweet and savory oats… (with a softboiled egg, avocado, cottage cheese, and blueberry jam)

Biting into muffins…

Β

… (as opposed to messing/crumbling them)…

Pumpkin chili… (with avocado, salsa, and cottage cheese)

Cherries

Toasted English muffins with multiple toppings (why settle for just one?)

… and who knows what the next one will be.

I do enjoy trying new foods, and I definitely get hit by the creativity bug every once in a while, but more often than not I find myself craving and eating the same things.

Some might call it a “rut”, but I’m not a big fan of the phrase because I amΒ a fan of what I eat, and a rut, to me, implies that someone is unhappy with how they’re eating and wants to change it.

Repeating eats seems to be almost taboo in the blog world, and people who eat the same things day after day either label themselves as boring or disordered. But why all the pressure for variety? Why mess with a good thing? If you like it, then eat it until your heart’s content…

Β

… or until you get tired of almond butter and pudding oatmeal, and move on to something else πŸ˜‰

. – . – . – .

Do you get stuck on certain foods? Do you see it as a bad thing?

What are some of your current obsessions?

Oh goodness, yes I do – you know that by now, hahaha πŸ˜‰

Current obsessions = protein bars and shakes.

  2. August 13, 2011 6:00 pm

Grape Kombucha!? I need to find some of that!! YUM!

And I am diggin’ the rice cake snack girl! πŸ™‚

  3. August 13, 2011 6:04 pm

My daily eats are basically one amazingly delicious food ‘rut’ and I love it! A majority of Americans are stuck in a fast food rut so why can’t I be stuck in a buckwheat, banana and cinnamon rut? πŸ˜‰ Other obsessions? quinoa w/ nooch, avocado on Ezekiel bread and hummus … on/in everything! Choosing to repetitively eat healthy, yummy food is not disordered, its treating your body (and soul) well! πŸ™‚

this is SO me. For as long as I can remember I have gone through phases of food “ruts” – but I totally agree with you that “rut” carries a negative connotation, which has never been the case for me – I just love the particular food so damn much that I can’t get enough πŸ™‚
It’s funny to think back on certain times in my life because I can always associate them with particular foods.

oh! and one my current obsessions = rice cakes too! love those babies. eat’em daily.
other foods currently on repeat = brussels sprouts, steamed carrots, strawberries, plums, kiwis, and almonds

I definitely get stuck on certain foods, though I keep a pretty limited pantry so there isn’t really an opportunity for variety.

I just got through a zucchini phase (I know, you’ll never find yourself in one of those :D) and a popcorn phase. And I’m feeling a cereal phase coming on…just stocked up today πŸ™‚

  6. August 13, 2011 6:13 pm

I went through so many of the same phases. I’m happy with what I eat and I don’t see what’s wrong in sticking to what works! Right now I’m in a yogurt mess and sweet potato phase

  7. August 13, 2011 6:17 pm

My “eat peanut butter on everything” phases hasn’t gone away yet ;).

  8. August 13, 2011 6:18 pm

I definitely go through food phases. When I like something a lot, I crave it, and when I crave it, I eat it. So if I crave it everyday, then i eat it everyday. Then all of a sudden I find something new that I love and the next cycle starts! It actually makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier!

    What.a.delicious.post.
I am the EXACT same – I totally get stuck on certain foods but kinda love it!
I actually have you to blame/ thank/worship for many of my current food obsessions. Today I made your cottage cheese protein pudding thing and it was soooo creamy and decadent tasting(I prefer it to tofu protein pudding methinks) topped with cinnamon grahams! LOVE love LOVE it, will be making it over and over, It truly was a bowl of heaven. This only goes to further confirm my thoughts that your foodie creative mind can do NO wrong.
I could go on for ages listing my current obsessions. So ill just say all of your recipes I have made, and my love affair with yoghurt coated banana chips has been going strong for a looooong time- they are friggin ridic delicious!
    I love this post!

I eat a lot of the same foods, and I’m a-okay with it! I love it actually. And where in the world did you find that grape kombucha?!? I’ve never seen it!!

  11. August 13, 2011 6:35 pm

I too get stuck on certain foods but nothing wrong with that – as long as it makes you happy and feel good! My current loves – cottage cheese with fruit, vanilla mint smoothies and home grown tomatoes with hummus!
Those rice cakes topped with almond butter abd cottage cheese looks fabulous – ill have to give it a try!

Ok, all of your pics make me want to just have you come to my house and make me food. Everything looks so yummy!

I’m completely a rut girl. I’ve always pretty much eaten the same things, and once I find something I like, I don’t want to take the chance of not enjoying that snack/meal/whatever. Sounds a bit weird, but so true. Currently I’m loving greek yogurt/oats/sweetener/cereal on top for breakfast and huge salads for dinner. And fro-yo’s becoming a daily thing…

  13. August 13, 2011 6:45 pm

I definitely have food phases and did as a kid- I had phases with Grape Nuts cereal, pb & pickle tortilla sandwiches, Krusteaz waffles with LOTS of syrup, etc
    I don’t think it’s a bad thing as long as it doesn’t come from a disordered/restricting mentality.
Current obsessions: 6 months later and I’m still on a major kefir with puffins kick, also obsessed with oversize t-shirts/chunky knits, high waisted shorts/skirts, and anything pomegranate flavoured

  14. August 13, 2011 6:54 pm

I had cereal for lunch today!!! Winning!

I get stuck on foods, oats for instance ; ) I just LOVE them, why change when you know what you like ; )

Glad you enjoyed the video of us, we were bored, lol, and also trying to figure out if we should buy a new camera like a flip cam, I think we are going to , the other one stinks : p

    happy saturday! love you!!!

I love your food obsessions! I know what ya mean about getting hooked on a food, happpens to this girl ALL the time πŸ˜‰ I think puffins will soon be my next obsession mwahaha
Oh and in response to your comment, heck yes I’ve tried kashi honey sunshine and I agree, they’re just like capn crunch!! πŸ˜€

I definately get stuck on certain foods. Even as a kid I remember going through waffle and pancake phases, strawberry and apple etc. Even as an adult it still remains true. I love trying new things and do so every chance I get, but there are still foods I always come back to.

Currently I’m obessing over pancakes, muffins, mushrooms, and veggie stir frys. Then there are things like nut butters, broccoli and bananas that I never get tired of.

  17. August 13, 2011 7:11 pm

oh I totally get what you’re saying! I go through food phases ALL.THE.TIME. That doesn’t mean it’s a “disordered behavior”! It just means you really really like what you eat!

  18. August 13, 2011 7:21 pm

I certainly get stuck on certain foods but I have to say that I really am in a rut right now because I want to change what I’m eating but can’t think of anything else to have. That and I’m not putting enough effort into trying new things. Oh well, my own fault really πŸ˜›

    • August 13, 2011 9:26 pm

I hear ya. Sometimes it seems like WAY too much effort to think about what to eat… especially when you’re busy. Like, I have too many other things to think of, so I don’t wanna be sitting there trying to come up with something new for dinner, ya know?

  19. August 13, 2011 7:22 pm

I am the same way!! I think I was in a popcorn rut for two years straight… I ate popcorn every night. not even out of habit. I just really like popcorn. Then I just kind of stopped and switched to cereal. Every now and then I’ll have popcorn again and I still love it, but I don’t need to have it every night anymore!

Lately i’ve been loving cereal and frozen baked goods. And granola bars. I know it’s a bit weird, but I’ve always eaten my waffles without defrosting them so i decided to try it with a muffin one day and I really liked it. Then i decided to try it with a granola bars and i found that they get a really cool texture when they’re frozen!

  20. August 13, 2011 7:24 pm

I’ve never had the grape flavor! Yummy. Your breakfast looks very simular to mine! πŸ™‚

  21. August 13, 2011 7:40 pm

I’ve been “stuck” both in a healthy ok way and a not-so-healthy way.

For example, eating X everyday in efforts to limit caloric intake was NOT good. But now, I actually struggle to not have variety (let myself be “stuck”) Its hard to eat the same thing 2 days in a row, even if I LOVE it, except ice cream. I have it every night and have for almost a year now. It’s my fave!

After reading this post, I’m inspired. I’m going to start repeating the things I really like πŸ™‚ Currently, rice pudding, cheerios (together and separate), avocado, and blueberries all make the list

    • August 13, 2011 9:29 pm

There was a time where I was completely obsessed with making sure I ate a big variety of things, but that’s nonsense. Eat what you love, and as much of it as you want πŸ˜€

  22. August 13, 2011 7:43 pm

my freshman year of high school i would have the same breakfast and lunch for the LONGEST time: a bowl of flaxplus and milk with a banana for breakfast, and a pb sandwich for lunch. then at one point i would eat an avocado with activia every day haha. my current obsession is chocolate ❀ oh wait… i've always been obsessed!

I am on a total rice cake kick right now! I’ve been getting these really yummy caramel ones and they are the bomb. I like to put them in a bowl with amod milk and almond butter and jam or cinnamon or whatev and they get all soggy and delicious πŸ™‚ If that’s being in a rut then I love my rut!

  24. August 13, 2011 8:07 pm

I do believe I’m in love with your bowl of pumpkin chili there…… yumm!!!! I don’t mind being in food ‘ruts’ now and then, eventually you find a brand new love that you just can’t get enough of, so I just run with it. My rut lately? Oats with carob, cinnamon and a pinch of chili. Sounds wrong? Tastes awesome!

I TOTALLY get on food kicks. (actually got “yelled” at by my nutritionist for “being in a rut”) I can’t help the foods I like, and if I like them. I eat them! Right now I am on an old school pb&j kick. I think I have 5 different (ok maybe more) of jellies/jams anddd maybe the same amount of nut butters. haha. EVERY time i go to the store I think I buy a new one. whoops.

  28. August 13, 2011 8:50 pm

I definitely do that with food too. There’s nothing wrong with it at all in my eyes. In fact its completely right because I’m honoring my cravings!

  29. August 13, 2011 8:51 pm

I tend to stick to the same foods cause I love them so much ! No harm in that as long as it’s balanced . Once in a while I get the urge to switch things up though. Currently I’m stuck on banana oats !

  30. August 13, 2011 8:56 pm

I totally can relate. I will eat something every day and then one day I will want something else and move on..
Not really the same for dinner though, I like to make new things for dinner as much as possible, most the time that doesn’t happen, but I try πŸ™‚

  31. August 13, 2011 9:07 pm

I definitely get stuck on foods… but then again I also get bored really easily. right now i’m on a cashew butter (homemade!) kick. that and i’m loving yogurt & peanut flour. with something chocolatey in it.

  32. August 13, 2011 9:10 pm

“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” πŸ˜€

I’ve been eating the same bedtime snack for like four years – whole grain toast with tons of peanut butter, sprinkled with cinnamon. usually some berries on the side!

Currently though, I’m on a Vanilla Kefir kick – I’ve never been a fan of straigh-up milk, but I looove this stuff in a cereal/fruit mix!

  33. August 13, 2011 9:33 pm

Oh, boy. That’s happened to me a few times. Spend a minute too long reading a post and you’ve got yourself burn-y oats! Eeep.

I actually just posted about this! HAHA! Well, not as straight-forward-ly, but a similar concept. I eat a lot of oats. I love oats. A lot. Fitting, eh? But my mom was all ‘eat something different!’, so I did. And I really enjoyed it! Maybe not quite as much as my dessert-y oats, but very very good nonetheless! I do tend to eat something over and over until I can’t stand it any longer, but I try and think- you don’t get cravings for favorites without trying something new first! Like, I never would be adoring steel cut oats had I not tried something other than my overnighters. Or I’d not be loving tabouleh if I’d stuck to completely sweet things as I always seem to want. I figure I can always have a favorite another time after giving something else a go. But then I want to give my body what it wants! Oh, what a dilemma to have πŸ˜‰

Current obsessions: oatmeal (always) with all the fixin’, chocolate and coffee together, honey and maple syrup, animal crackers, soy pudding and yogurt. Nom.

I think I might pick up some kombucha at the store tomorrow. Eeep! I’m nervous. It’s so expensive, and I’ve never tried it! Flavor suggestions? I figure you’d be a great person to ask since our tastes are so similar <3<3<3

totally get stuck on certain foods! But then I do the same thing with songs… same song on repeat- doesn;t usually make me the favourite person in the house. I can’t get over my love affair with buckwheat at the moment. Your sweet and savoury oats look divine!!!

    • August 14, 2011 7:21 am

πŸ˜† I do that with music too! When I find a song I like, I basically play it to death. I’ll listen to it over and over until I literally can’t stand it and I have to go cold turkey for a few months.

  37. August 13, 2011 10:53 pm

When I like a food, I can’t stop eating it…it’s what the taste buds crave! Hummus & cottage cheese are my current obsessions. oh and I’m the opposite with my muffins, hate biting directly into them!

I see absoloutely no problem with eating what you love, everyday.
Though sometimes I push myself out of my little cycle, and even though I would really love to just have my beloved baked sweet potato for dinner, I get myself to try a new recipe, and I’m usually really glad I did. I mean theres always tomorrow to that potato, right?

Dude, if they were my oats, I would have flipped. Thats one expesive banana wasted!!!!

  39. August 13, 2011 11:10 pm

I completely agree…why force yourself to not eat the same thing daily when it’s what your body craves? Even if it is the same thing for all three meals of the day haha

I had a serious Chipotle phase in high school. I ate it approximately 4 times a week (not even kidding in the slightest) for about a month. Soon enough I got sooo sick of it that I couldn’t eat it for almost an entire year! *gag*

And I’m so jealous of the Grape Kombucha! It’s literally the only flavor that my local Whole Foods doesn’t sell 😦

Um. I eat mostly the same foods every day – in fact I am having to keep a food diary for my dietician for a week and embarrassingly, it’s was almost the exact same thing for all meals and snacks for about five days straight.
But I think, like you said, it’s all about the motives behind it. I can’t get enough of these foods and maybe it’s just habit, but there’s nothing else I want at the time – when I like a certain food, it takes a loooooooooong time for me to get sick of it.
My staples at the moment – tuna, steamed spinach/kale/silverbeet with a tomato pasta sauce stirred through, and natural yogurt sprinkled with natural sweetener.

A couple of years before I was having toasts with cheese and apple slices for every dinner I had during my last years at the high school..and I think I could come up with other examples πŸ™‚ I donΒ΄t think it is a bad thing. 43. August 14, 2011 12:22 am

I love trying out and experimenting with new foods, but when I develop something I like I tend to stick to it (at least for a while). While experimenting is great sometimes you want something that’s tried and proven – you know?

Current obsession is nutritional yeast and spinach. Not necessarily together, but always there in some form πŸ˜›

  44. August 14, 2011 12:24 am

I’ve definitely been to phases like this (especially as a child): Nutella, chicken sausage, chocolate cereal, yogurt bowls, toast, etc. My latest ones were pancakes and zucchini. Nothing wrong about that, in my opinion! πŸ˜‰

  45. August 14, 2011 1:01 am

As long as your obsession includes chocolate and almond butter, Im not worried πŸ˜‰ I think it is a sign of health when you just go for something, and give into what your body craves. And I absolutely dont see it as a bad thing!

At the moment Im obsessed with chocolate (well, that one is everlasting..), roasted veggies (especially pumpin and sugarsnaps and green beans), oat-pancakes and nut butters!

The pictures in this post makes me so hungry! Im a little scared of it, but I want to try out savory oat some time!

  47. August 14, 2011 1:46 am

I think it was Averie from Love Veggies and Yoga that said ‘its not a rut its a groove’ – a sentiment I completely agree with! I tend to have the same ‘meals’ like green smoothies and salads but change up the ingredients so I can satisfy my creative side and desire for variety at the same time! But I don’t see it as a bad thing because I absolutely love everything and what isn’t broke doesn’t need fixing in my opinion! πŸ™‚ I’ll occasionally get inspired by other bloggers though and give it a go and that’s how I find new favorites and then I get stuck in another rut with those haha! But heck, I’ve been eating squash every day of my life for two years now and I’m not bored yet πŸ˜› I wonder when that day will come hmmmm…

I wish we had Kombucha in the UK!

I tend to get a little obsessed with certain foods, not through fear of others, but because they become part of a ‘routine.’ Many aspects of my life feature in these ‘routines,’ which tip over into OCD if I don’t monitor them closely. However, even when I was a kid I went through phases with food too: I had a Weetabix phase, a Fruit & Fibre phase, a tuna sandwich phase, and a *ahem* crisp sandwich phase. Clearly, I was the epitome of health.

Your pudding oats are inspired though: I discovered them via Emma & Sweet Tooth Runner and have had an equivalent using rice flakes (gluten-free) for breakfast for a week in a row!

Post-childhood obsessions = Sun Warrior oats, polenta with chickpeas in tomato sauce, green monsters, and now pudding oats πŸ˜€

I was thinking about this very topic yesterday! I often feel pressure to show the blog world some amazing, innovative recipe that I’ve created, when all I want to do is eat something that’s tried and true. I couldn’t agree with you more–we should eat what we love, not what we think somebody else will love. πŸ™‚

My current obsessions: Avocado + sliced turkey +hummus +tzatziki; eggs + cream cheese + jam; Kay’s Naturals almond cookie bites dipped in peanut butter; sauteed spinach + melted organic American cheese (throwback cheese!). Oh, and let’s not forget the most important obsession: whipped sweet cottage cheese + peanut butter + granola + chocolate chips. I’m beginning to think it’s not an obsession, rather a lifelong love affair. I’ve been eating this combination every night before bed for over a year. Will it ever end? I don’t know…I can just imagine telling my husband that I need to eat my cottage cheese before I go to sleep on my wedding night. How sexy! :-p

I often wonder if this is result of past disordered eating habits, but its just what i like. And why give up what you like?
I’m so relieved i’m not the only one who thinks like this!

I practically eat the same lunch every day. It’s a yogurt mess, but I love it and I don’t care.

I definitely don’t think eating the same foods over and over again is a bad thing. I like them right? Much better than forcing myself to eat something I don’t enjoy. I try to get some variety in but that’s usually with my savory meals. I don’t like eating those multiple times. My current favorites are oats, avocado on toast, yogurt messes, fruit, pudding, and muffins. I can have those all the time. They’re too good to get swapped out by something else. I’m the same way with eating something until I get sick of it though. When that happens I move onto my next “obsession” πŸ˜€

Bananas with almond butter, hummus veggie wraps (with pickles!), and voluminous overnight oats. πŸ™‚ Obsessions are fine!!! It’s easier to eat a lot of the same stuff because you don’t have to constantly buy new food stuff.

i’ll admit i do eat the same things everyday–and go through phases just like you…is it so wrong to OD on the best munchies ever?? i think not! lately it’s been veggie burgers, peanut butter and jelly oats with egg whites on top and pumpkin pudding πŸ™‚ why mess with perfection? you don’t!! πŸ™‚

All the time! I eat the same stuff constantly just cause it’s what I love and crave. My current obsessions: protein cakes (as if you couldn’t tell from just about every breakfast post! ;)), peanut butter, yogurt, eggs, and beans. Just give me those and I’m a happy girl.

I’m glad you wrote about this! I often think ‘oh cripes I’m stuck in a rut’ and feel bad about it, because 99% of bloggers have different things every day. But like you say, I LOVE the food I eat, and I know it’ll change soon. There was the Green Monster phase, the Weetabix phase, the Pancake phase, the Macncheese phase, the Hoeny Sandwiches phase, the Hummus phase, the Tempeh phase, the Grains phase….I can’t wait to see where my phases take me next :p

I get stuck on foods ALL the time. And I definitely don’t see it as a bad thing πŸ™‚ Eat what you like and if you like it, just keep on eatin it! I’ve been obsessed with smoothies and muffins lately so I’ve been eating plenty of those.
I reeally want to try some grape kombucha. I’ve never tried it and it just sounds SO refreshing to me today!

Oh my goodness! I’m drooling right now! lol All of that looks amazing!

Wow all those breakfasts and lunches look awesome! I have recently become addicted to oatmeal and am looking for new things to put in it! Thanks for the ideas. Also, my current food “rut” would have to be yogurt! I love yogurt and have to have at least one if not two a day!

I’m always stuck on the SAME darn things. My breakfast is something I haven’t changed in months! The usual Kashi GoLean, frozen bananas, PB or Sunflower Seed Butter, and vanilla soymilk. YUMMY. πŸ˜€ If I could eat it all day every day, I would.

i get stuck on foods all the time.
it’s like i go thru phases where i just HAV to hav the said something everyday. just because it’s so delicious and satisfying. πŸ™‚

Can you believe I’ve never had a grape kombucha?

  70. August 14, 2011 5:39 pm

i always go through food phases. I don’t see it as a bad thing at all! As long as you’re healthy and happy I think that all is good in the world!

I’ve been going through a peanut butter phase for about 22 years now, but I go through lots of food phases. I love food so much that I think it’s a waste to eat the same foods all the time and not try new things, but I also think that if you find things you truly love eating, why not repeat them? I admit I rarely repeat meals but it’s mostly because I have so many new things I want to try and not because I feel pressured by blogland.

    P.S. Grape kombucha? Must try!

I go through lunch phases. At the end of an amazing salad at work, I’m already thinking about how I can recreate the exact same salad for tomorrow’s lunch. It gets tough because I don’t measure my ingredients for my dressings. So I spend an extra 10 minutes (despite being late for work) trying to make my dressing taste better than yesterdays πŸ™‚
