. WIAW … round thirteen .

August 3, 2011

[un]Lucky number 13!

You know, I’ve never been a superstitious girl, but before we start today’s party, I just wanted to briefly mention the nasty bit of bad luck that I experienced this morning.

Remember this cup?

Well, it got a makeover…

… and just between you and me, I think it looked better before…

Sad face.

Lesson #1: Don’t try to carry too many things at once – it will result in casualties.

. – . – . – .

I woke up this morning and immediately realized two very important things. First, the days are getting shorter – it’s no longer as bright outside when I wake up at 5 AM, which means that Fall is on its way. Yippee! Second, something was viscously gnawing on the walls of my stomach. Very ouch. Fortunately, breakfast came around shortly and tamed the beast in my belly.

Focus! Sorry. My brain gets a little fuzzy when I’m hungry.

Much better. Eggy bananafied steelies topped with almond butter and pudding. No more gnawing.

Unfortunately, the peace and quiet was short lived. About an hour and a half (wtf?!?!) after I took my last bite of breakfast, I started feeling that fatigued-and-agitated restlessness that I associate with hunger, so I had a [mid]-mid-morning snack

[A few handfuls of blueberries and the last bit of cottage cheese in the container]

… which did an okay job at holding me over until it was time for my pre-workout snack

I normally go the banana with almond butter route, but I just wasn’t feeling it this morning. Yeah, I’m kind of shocked too. Instead, I had a handful of dark chocolate drops (which is just a fancy name for “big chocolate chips”), a nectarine, and some vanilla almond butter protein frosting for dipping.

Today’s workout was Stage 2, workout A, of the NROLFW workout plan, and it whooped me. I have no idea why, but I started feeling so exhausted halfway through. I still managed to finish, but it definitely wasn’t one of my better workouts. I blame it on the lack of banana in my pre-workout snack…

Lesson #2: If it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it.

I pouted for a little while, but my pity-party was rudely interrupted by the beast in my belly, who was once again demanding to be fed. FineLunch is served…

[Salad beast, yogurt mess, mango protein smoothie]

And with that, the cranky-stank went away, and Amanda came out to play. Hooray!

*cringe* Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I also couldn’t play. I spent most of the afternoon and early evening getting some work done on the computer, while snacking, naturally…

[Cinnamon Raisin Bran Muffin]

[Chocolate pudding mixed with cocoa powder and topped with almond butter. Cookie dough ball]

… and reading [A Dog’s Purpose]. What? Like you’re 100% productive at work. Pft.

Lesson #3: All work and no play makes for an extremely boring day.

This book wasn’t much in the way of entertainment, though. I mean, it’s not bad, per say, but I find myself just wanting to get through it without being really interested. Lackluster at best.

Thankfully, dinner was a much more pleasurable experience…

[Sweet and savory eggy oats, topped with hummus, banana, and cottage cheese]

… and the rest of the evening looks to be pretty promising as well. I’ll be heading out to get one final look at my new condo before finalizing all the paperwork, and it’ll be mine in the middle of September. Eeeee. I still can’t believe it’s actually happening 😀 I’ll try to snag some pictures for you guys while I’m in there, but no promises… The current owners still live there, and I don’t want to violate their privacy.

I hope you guys are having a great night! Much love, until tomorrow.

. – . – . – .

Do you ever have poor workouts? How do you handle them? Truth be told, I pout. At least for a little while. I try so hard to treat my body well, that I feel kind of cheated if it starts misbehaving.

And on a completely unrelated note…

I haven’t posted any recipes in far too long. What kind would you like to see? Something sweet? Something savory? A specific meal/snack? Let me know!

You are an incredible writer Amanda, I was literally laughing out loud at the mug make-over joke. So well written! I get disappointed when I have a bad workout, but then I remember there is always the next one 🙂

  2. August 3, 2011 5:52 pm

Delicious as always, love! Sorry to hear about your workout and your mug, at least the yummy foods added some sparkle to the day 🙂 And yippee hooray for the condo news!!! Ahh I absolutely cannot wait to see it m’dear! 😀

  3. August 3, 2011 5:54 pm

Those muffins are GORGEOUS! and I’m so sorry about the mug. It was such a pretty little thing.

  4. August 3, 2011 5:54 pm

This post had me entertained the entire time. Sorry about the mug – that’s pretty tragic if you ask me! Can’t wait to see the new place!

  5. August 3, 2011 5:55 pm

So sad about the mug! I remember thinking it was so cute the first time I saw it. I broke one of my favorite glasses a few months ago and I just wanted to cry because there is no way I’ll find a replacement.

When I have a bad workout I honestly dwell on it for way too long — but then I remind myself that the first workout after a bad workout is usually a really really good one, so I try to look forward to that!

    • August 4, 2011 8:46 am

Yeah, luckily I wasn’t TOO attached to that mug… I have another one that my mom bought for me when I was recovering from me ED, and if I broke that one, I’d definitely cry…

  6. August 3, 2011 5:57 pm

aw I’m sorry you had a bad day…but really, don’t worry, I break mugs and have bad workouts all the time! It’s okay to not be perfect.

  7. August 3, 2011 5:57 pm

I’m definitely a sweets lover myself so any new recipes involving something dessert like totally has my attention. Loving those eats and the way you listen to your body 🙂

  8. August 3, 2011 6:08 pm

I always love reading your entertaining posts and seeing your beautiful, delicious food photos! 🙂 I haven’t had much time to read or comment on blogs lately and I’ve been missing it. To answer your questions, I get a little bummed when I have a not-so-awesome workout but, I try not to let it get to me too much. I know that for me personally, how I feel changes drastically throughout each month due to internal and external changes and cycles so I know if I have a poor workout, there’s probably a good reason for it, and I just hope that the next workout will be better!

And I am ALWAYS down for sweets so, I would love to see some dessert recipes 🙂

  9. August 3, 2011 6:09 pm

So sorry about the cup and workout 😦 Here’s to better times ahead!

I want to see some blondies made in your kitchen! 🙂

  10. August 3, 2011 6:16 pm

Something savory for sure would be a good recipe! Congrats again on the condo

  11. August 3, 2011 6:16 pm

Don’t worry, everyone has poor workouts occasionally. Even the pros. Sometimes your body just isn’t feeling it. I pout too, even though I know it’s normal to not have a fantastic workout every time I set foot in the gym. There are lots of fabulous workouts in your future! Now…get me some of those chocodrops! (73% is a magical number for cocoa content, in my opinion.)

  12. August 3, 2011 6:16 pm

Oh nooooo!! I hate when I break my mugs!! Can you glue it back together?? I would totally try to 🙂

Poor workouts are definitely frustrating but the best part is that there’s always another workout just waiting to be kicked in the butt by you on the horizon!

    • August 4, 2011 9:00 am

I probably could have tried some super glue, but knowing me, I would end up gluing my fingers together and the cup would still leak through the cracks 🙄

  13. August 3, 2011 6:18 pm

NO I do not remember that cup and instantly fell in love with it and then…and then!!! I feel for you.
It happens, keep moving is what I always say but still…
Did you save the remnants? Craft project! Mosaic kit from the craftstore and you got a cool hot plate or coaster?
    Maybe?

Man, I am SO clumsy- many a pretty piece of dish ware of mine had the same tragic make-over as your mug, sadness.
Not every workout can be absolutely amazing- even athletes have crappy ones from time to time! I don’t dwell on them and it makes me appreciate the workouts where I kick ass even more.
I reeeeally look forward to when you post recipes- iv made enough of them! Your muffins, cookie dough balls & protein puddings get made weekly, as far as I’m concerned you can do no wrong in the kitch.I don’t mind the type of recipe but I’m probably more so a fan of the
    sweet snacky types.
    Xxx

  15. August 3, 2011 6:26 pm

Oh no! Sorry about the mug! I think you should go out and buy a new one, that would make me feel better 😛
I like that you had a mid – mid morning snack. I realize I had one of those the other day too 😛

When I have bad workouts, I pout too. Not for long, but none the less I will act like a 5 year old for at least 10 minutes. Luckily I get over it pretty fast, there is always tomorrow for a better one!

  16. August 3, 2011 6:55 pm

I would love to see some new recipes! anything you post will be lovely I am sure 🙂

  17. August 3, 2011 7:02 pm

Yay for new recipes! I would like to see breakfast ones, or ones with tons of roasted veggies as a part of it 🙂 I really enjoyed your oatmeal combo I tried this morning, even though it took me about a half hour to finally and get the “nerve” to eat something different for once

  18. August 3, 2011 7:08 pm

Sorry to hear about the strawberry mug- i remember seeing it before kn previous posts and loving it! Oh well – just think more fun stuff to buy for your new place! ( now i have an idea for a housewarming gift!)
Would love to see some new recipes – anything you make always looks fabulous!

Poor Mug! Poor workout! I loathe poor workouts. I have to take breaks to make it through. It takes longer, but I think my body thanks me in the end.

Actually it thanks me because I give it food 🙂

  22. August 3, 2011 7:33 pm

I simply must try these sweet and savory oats! I do love sweet and salty. Hummus and ‘nanner?! I can’t even fathom how delicious that combination must be- though I imagine it’s pure amazing. Nom!

Truth be told I’m not much of a workout person lately with trying to gain weight and all. I miss the adrenaline bunches, though! I do yoga from time to time and ab exercises. If I’m having a “stiff” day in yoga, I get a bit ticked and pout too. Why can’t I bend as far today? Wah! And then I get frustrated, which sort of defeats the mind-calming / balancing effect yoga is MEANT to evoke. Eeep! Oops.

You already know I want something sweet. I love muffins! Perhaps a chocolate-banana muffin? Or maybe a fall-inspired muffin. Like pumpkin? OOOH! What about a maple-cinnamon flavored muffin? I bet raisins would be good in something like that. Or maybe some smoothie recipes- I’ve tried making a few and they’ve all been lackluster. Perhaps smoothies just aren’t my thing, but then again- hot oats weren’t my thing before trying your method, either 😉 Okay, I’m drooling. Moving on…

On another note- tomorrow will be my first time having overnighters since trying our egg-y banana-y steel cutters! I’m obsessed. Oh schnap. How I love my oats so!

  23. August 3, 2011 7:35 pm

I’ve never even thought of having pudding on oats but after seeing it on your blog so many times, I definitely want to try it!

  24. August 3, 2011 7:39 pm

  25. August 3, 2011 7:41 pm

I love all the lessons you embedded. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is probably the most important with regards to working out.. I have had bathroom issues, energy issues, and focus issues when I change what works. People always criticize it, but routine can be a good thing! I don’t have poor workouts often, but usually the poor workouts stem from bathroom issues. perhaps that is TMI, but it’s true, and it got me to a sports nutritionist because I can’t take it!

I would like to see muffin recipes because they make my world go round. Or perhaps a scone. I just love baking stuff!

  26. August 3, 2011 7:53 pm

I have a great idea for a post – “health rules” you break! or “health sins”! I think it would be great to hear about the “rules” for eating healthily that you break always or even just sometimes 😛 It would be a fun tag for all food bloggers!

I broke my favorite spoon today 😦 I hate when I break dishes and utensils!!!

  28. August 3, 2011 8:22 pm

Aww poor mug – but hey, this gives you an excuse to get a new, even cuter mug – right? Right.

  29. August 3, 2011 8:29 pm

well even if your day wasn’t the most exciting, at least it was full of yummy eats! 🙂

Whenever I have a bad workout, it’s usually because I’m overdoing it – either not sleeping enough or just doing too much working out! If i can chalk it up to that, then I scale things back and try to rest. But if I’ve been sleeping well and doing a modest amount of working out, then maybe I’m just in a funk! Yeah, I get angry for a bit but usually by the time I’ve stretched and cooled down I can put it behind me and say “oh well! hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow!”

As for recipes…how bout one with veggies?? 😀

  30. August 3, 2011 8:31 pm

I get down on myself if I have a bad workout. I only have so much time in the day to fit in a good sweat session and hate ‘wasting’ it on a lackluster workout. Even though I know something is better than nothing … I’d much prefer to give it my all!

I love all your breakfast concoctions! I’m already drooling for my eggified hot cereal in the morning!

  31. August 3, 2011 8:31 pm

Poor mug! I liked seeing it in the background 😦 .

As for workouts, sometimes I just don’t have enough energy to do them the way I usually do but it is not a big problem for me. Instead of pouting or directly quitting, I do the same exercises but in smaller series.

  32. Emily permalink
    August 3, 2011 9:11 pm

No! My comment was going to be about how much I love that mug. 😦
When I have a poor workout I usually just try to remember that I did what I could and that’s all I could do. If I don’t even try then that’s another story.
And I vote for savory recipes! I love sweets, but savory foods seem to get neglected with all of the yummy muffins and cookies floating around the blog world.

  33. August 3, 2011 9:36 pm

Your WIAWs always puts a big smile on my face- your food looks yum yum and I cant stop loving how regulary it shows up 😀 I tell you again and again- but you truly are an amazing inspiration to me!!
So sorry about your mug 😦 And your workout! But poor workouts will happen from time to time. I love my runs when I feel light and speedy and energetic, but I hate them when I feel weak. For me, I bet it can be fixed with more foods- I have already felt improvement from eating more regulary. But when I have my bad workouts, i really try to focus on the fact thats its just for a day.. yesterday might was great, and my body is just not fully recovered. Even though you fuel up, I guess your body was just a little tired! You will rock a new workout tomorrow 😀
For a recipe, sweet please 🙂 With chocolate. And nut butter. Or sweet potato. I bet Ill like it whatever youll post 🙂

  34. August 3, 2011 9:38 pm

Do you ever have poor workouts? How do you handle them?
Of course. I think everyone has some bad experiences with exercise. Sometimes I feel too tired, unmotivated, angry at my body and mind for being ‘inadequate’… But what can you do except relax your standards, accept that today wasn’t great but next time it will be better, and respect and love your body? Obviously this is extremely hard, but I’m hoping it can be achieved over time.

I would love some sweet recipes – biggest sweet tooth ever over here 🙂

And I have a request: whatever you decide to make just make a double batch and send me some, mmmkay? 😉

  36. August 3, 2011 10:31 pm

I had a poor workout today. I just tried to plow through it while listening to music.

  37. August 3, 2011 10:41 pm

the thing is with workouts.. you can’t always be on form 100%. there is noways your body can sustain giving it 100% everyday. When i have a bad workout i think.. ok what happened. was i tired? did i train really hard the last few days? and try and plan the next week to accomodate it. and then i just sort of take it as like.. well atleast i moved my body today- better then watching friends re-runs and drinking tea. ( oh-wait. not so sure about that). and then the NEXT day i come back leaner and meaner. well..not sure about that either. But definitely – some sort of come back is made!

    • August 4, 2011 12:50 pm

You’re totally right – can’t be 100% all the time. I think the thing that gets to me the most is that suffering through a workout reminds me too much of the past, which is something I never want to go back to!

I also have poor workouts every now and then, I just think that my body sometimes needs more rest than I allowed it to them and then it acts “weird” 🙂

  39. August 3, 2011 11:44 pm

I would love the cinnamon raisin muffin recipe!

  40. August 4, 2011 12:00 am

Cinnamon Raisin Muffins?! I bet those would be good with a certain nut buttah. 😉 I hear ya about the pre-workout meal! Bananas are my absolute FAVORITE to power me through. 🙂

  41. August 4, 2011 12:00 am

I’m always stuck on what to eat post and pre workout, and all of your snacks always look so yummy. If you have any easy pre-post workout snack recipies to share I’d be very greatful 🙂

    • August 4, 2011 12:57 pm

My favorite pre-workout snacks are so simple, that I can’t really call them recipes 😆 I usually just have a banana with nut butter and some cottage cheese. And for post-workout, just one of the protein smoothies that’s already on my recipes page. I might have to get to brainstorming some new ideas, though…

  42. August 4, 2011 2:19 am

I must start trying lunches like yours, I love the idea of the salad with smoothie and cereal combo! I had a pretty crap workout yesterday and it really knocked my confidence – it was a run and I was slower than usual. I’m just itching to get back out and run again and put in a better workout next time round!

  43. August 4, 2011 3:44 am

aw man! sorry about the smash! I smashed 3 ramekins the other day and there’s still glass on the kitchen floor. That dinner of yours looks very intriguing 🙂 must try egg oats some time xx

  44. August 4, 2011 3:58 am

Awww nooooo poor muggie!! Go and treat yourself to cute new one! 🙂
I always LOVE your eats Amanda, you totally inspire me and I STILL need to make sweet and savory oats – I promise you I will one day!! I’m especially all over that muffin of course 😛
Gah, I totally hate it when I have a bad workout. I get so frustrated because I make sure I treat myself well when it comes to fuelling/refuelling and then it’s like my body rebels against me GRR! I get over it eventually though and there is always tomorrow! 🙂
As for a new recipe, well you already know I want something sweet of course!! A muffin is an obvious one hehe! 😛 But maybe because I make so many of my own muffins I need some inspiration for a cookie maybe? Maybe a maple type cookie? I’m all over maple syrup at the moment..
Ooooh and I meant to ask you…what happened to that kabocha you had?!

    • August 4, 2011 1:00 pm

  46. August 4, 2011 4:37 am

Your eats always look awesome! So sorry about your cup! It was so cute! I started A Dog’s Purpose a while back and I could not get into it AT ALL. I finally just gave up. I don’t think I even made it through 100 pages haha. Usually I can speed through books, so if I can’t get into it then I know there is something wrong. As for recipes- I’m game for anything! Perhaps a recipe for 1-2? I’m going back to school soon and part of my problem is finding recipes that I can tweak so that there is only enough for me 🙂

Always love your WIAW’s! Everything looks soo delicious. I just finished eating breakfast and I’m hungry again 😉
I definitely have those days where I have poor workouts, but since it happens every once in a while I’ve just accepted them as off days where I’m not on my game. It could be due to lack of sleep, fatigue, not enough food…anything basically. I won’t allow myself to beat myself up over it because there are all those other days where my workouts go great.
I say Yes Please to sweet recipes 😛

  55. August 4, 2011 7:50 am

Sorry you broke that cute cup 😦 I would have been so sad!
I actually have a poor workout probably about once a week. I have a soccer game monday, so usually tuesdays I am so tired and worn out from my monday night game, that instead of just taking it off I try to push through a workout. It is always lackluster and lame though, and just makes me feel worse than I did before. I really need to just take that day off and do some yoga!

  56. August 4, 2011 8:05 am

Ahh sorry about the mug! But it’s just an excuse to go out and buy some new stuff right? 😉

I’d love to see more of any kind of recipes! I always love your eats!

  57. August 4, 2011 9:07 am

Aww poor mug! I’ve been having the same food for a while now and I was getting a little bored of it. Thanks to your awesome eats now I have new ideas! I absolutely love stealing ideas from you because everything turns out so delicious! I hate bad workouts. I get really frustrated and yes, I do pout too 😀 I usually do something else after to make myself feel a little better. Some extra ab work or 10-15 minutes of something else. I’d love to see more recipes absolutely! I’m all for snack!

Aah crummy workouts are the pits! I pout too, for an hour or so, then just think ‘meh, eat some more carb / sleep more / drink more / sort out whatever I think the problem was’, and the next one is usually better 🙂
Banana, hummus, oats. I NEED to do that!

  61. August 4, 2011 2:50 pm

  62. August 4, 2011 3:29 pm

Mmm, I love savory oats, I’m surprised that they aren’t more popular! I hope your final paperwork went smoothly and you sealed the deal with the condo!

  63. August 4, 2011 3:41 pm

    Mmm….

  64. August 4, 2011 4:04 pm

This is kind of unrelated to your post, but I’ve noticed that our reading styles are very similar – I liked all the books you said you enjoyed in previous posts, and I found “A Dog’s Purpose” to be mediocre as well. On that note, you HAVE to read “Lullabies for Little Criminals” by Heather O’Neill. It’s such an amazing book!! I know you will LOVE it. And it’s by a Canadian author as well, woot 🙂

I definitely have less-than-stellar workouts sometimes. When that happens, I try to go easy on myself and modify however I need to and then let it go. Some days are just kind of fuzzy and sleepy and weird.
