. the early bird… .

July 19, 2011

… gets the worm…

…but I’ll pass on the worm and go with a hot cup of black tea instead…

But worm or no worm, I’m definitely an early bird, a morning lark; a person who eagerly jumps out of bed at hours that the majority of society considers ungodly, and for no apparent reason, really.

But there are several good reasons to be out of bed by 6 AM. Like what, you ask?

Well, to watch the sun rise…

To make, and eat, breakfast without feeling rushed…

But the thing that I love most about being an early bird? Peace and quiet. A chance to be alone and collect my thoughts. An opportunity to relax and be still before I walk out the door and become part of a loud and hectic world. The experience of serenity – something that I’ve come to appreciate even more in the past couple of weeks.

Life has taken a turn towards crazy. Not in a bad way, but in an “Omigosh its 7 PM and this is the first opportunity that I’ve had to sit down” kind of way. In other words, it’s been busy. Take today, for instance. After enjoying a leisurely [and messy] breakfast…

… I ran out the door for a quick 3 mile run, came home to shower and make myself presentable, hit up the bookstore and went a little crazy…

… made a pit stop at the grocery store and picked up some staples to prevent myself from going crazy…

… came home to inhale lunch, ran out the door again to meet with my real estate agent, spent the entire afternoon/evening looking at condos, came home to make dinner, and now it is indeed 7 PM, and this is indeed the first opportunity that I’ve had to sit down all day. Whew.

Not that I’m complaining. I enjoy days where I have lots of errands to run because it makes life more interesting, and makes me feel more alive. I’ll probably be dead tired by 9 o’clock, and passed out by 9:30… but hey, that’s life. At least I have my quiet and peaceful mornings to look forward to…

. – . – . – .

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Do you enjoy busy days?

I am EXACTLY the same way! I set my alarm for 5:30, yet will still spring out of bed EXACTLY at 5:00 AM. It’s so insane that its pretty much to the point of ridiculousness!

  2. July 19, 2011 7:03 pm

I’m totally a morning person, and while I’d like to say I prefer lazy days, I somehow always plan mine to the max. I guess I subconsciously like crazy busy days. Odd.

I’ve read two of those books. I’m eager to hear your opinions of them.

  3. July 19, 2011 7:04 pm

I’m an early bird- in college I used to wake up at 6 every day- now even though I don’t have a job or school I am naturally up at around 7- I just love the morning and the first peep of sunlight makes it hard for me to sleep. I love busy days- in fact I love having an agenda-places to be, things to get done, stuff to cross off my to-do list- when I’m busy I complain of needing time to relax but in truth there is only so long I can possibly relax without feeling antsy

  4. July 19, 2011 7:05 pm

you definitely are an early bird! That picture of the sunrise is gorgeous!

  5. July 19, 2011 7:05 pm

I’m definitely more of an early bird then night owl, but there are definetly already a few birds awake my the time I get up. In other words: I’m not as much of an early bird as some people. 6:00am is great, but any earlier is pushing it 🙂

  6. July 19, 2011 7:06 pm

I’m definitely a night owl, but I enjoy being an early bird too! I want the best of both worlds, but unfortunately that would involve very little sleep. 🙂

  7. July 19, 2011 7:06 pm

Early bird ALL the way! I love it that way. I feel like I can get SO much more accomplished that way. Honestly.. sleeping past 7:30am.. seems like I’ve wasted a large portion of my day.

  8. July 19, 2011 7:07 pm

Oh, hope you land a great place to live soon!

I am definitely a morning person. I remember during college I would put a fan near my head so I could go to sleep at 10 or 11, when everyone else was up til all hours. Now? I like to wake up around 6:30am, for the peace and quiet.

As for busy days, I definitely prefer a mix. I love being busy for half the day, but having the other half to do things I want to do, and don’t feel rushed over.

    Yay for the Alchemist! 🙂

  9. July 19, 2011 7:15 pm

Leisurely mornings and busy afternoons are a favorite of mine. Watching the sunrise is definitely part of my mornings too! Your photo is so beautiful, I love the purple!

  10. July 19, 2011 7:16 pm

Early bird allEarly bird all the way!!

I’m glad you had a productive day! I love that mrs dash seasoning! I have that too!!

How exciting too about looking for a place! Wishing you luck on finding a place!! Keep me posted!! Xoxo ❤

  11. July 19, 2011 7:19 pm

I’m both, but mostly a morning person. No worms for me either though 😉

I don’t know what a non-busy day would be like, and I do enjoy my busy-everydays.

  12. July 19, 2011 7:22 pm

    I’m definitely a early bird !
Like you said in your post, I like serenity and silence in the morning when I’m the first person awake in the house… alone with my thoughts, my dog and my cat. 🙂

  13. July 19, 2011 7:23 pm

I definitely know how you feel! Those days where you’re up at 6 and not sitting down until 7 are rough. I agree, though- errands are DEFINITELY fun for me! I always feel so accomplished at the end of the day; no matter how exhausted I might be.

Besides, being starved for dinner and too exhausted for creativity makes for a great reason to eat some oats 🙂 Nomnomnom.

I’m certainly an early riser now that I always eat breakfast. My body wakes me up and screams FEED ME!- no matter how little sleep I had. HAHA!

I adore Mrs. Dash! I’ve only ever had the original mix, though. Garlic and herb sounds scrumptious! I love me some garlic.

  14. July 19, 2011 7:24 pm

I totally want to start being a morning person again (i’ve been sleeping in far to often lately) – I love getting up early to start the day and feeling like i’ve already accomplished lots before others are even up 🙂 xo

‘The art of racing in the rain’ is a great book. I’ve been a 530am morning person for the past few weeks because I’m injured and that’s the only time I can swim, but I’d much rather sleep in. It is nice sometimes though to be up that early like you mentioned before the sunrise

  16. July 19, 2011 7:33 pm

I’m so glad you bought The Shadow of the Wind! It truly is an amazing book 🙂

I try to be an early bird. I set my alarm for 6am, and sometimes I get up – but usually I end up rolling over again and waking up around 8-ish. I love the mornings though. I love the idea of waking up with the sun, feeling like the only person awake, taking my time. Truth is, I think part of me is afraid to wake up early. Afraid of eating breakfast so early that I would get hungry for a morning snack, and thus eat more than I ‘should’.
I’m a bit of a night owl. I always procrastinate bed time by reading blogs, cleaning, reading books, watching TV… and I feel terrible about it! I have the best of intentions, every night, of going to sleep early, but I consistently fail.
Definitely something I need to work on.

    Do you enjoy busy days?
As much as I like the theory of a relaxed day, I truly prefer busy days. I like having a schedule, doing things, and feeling accomplished. It makes me feel alive, whereas lounging around the house all day, doing nothing, makes me feel depressed, lethargic, and guilty.

As usual, Amanda, you’ve given me some good food(!) for thought. I need to think about this all further, as I think it sheds light on my ED’s perfectionism.

I’m a total early bird!! I’m all about getting up early, enjoying my coffee, reading blogs/emails and then starting my day 🙂 I’ve tried to be a night owl, but regardless of how late I stay up I still get up early!!

I actually want to cry a little bit everytime my beyotch of an alarm clock rudely awakes me from my restful slumber every morning & I have to forcefully drag myself from my warm cosy bed- I guess you could say I’m not a morning person. I am writing this comment at like 2am and feeling pretty perky right now= night owl for sure.
That picture of the sunrise is beautiful- the colours look magical!
I found steel cut oats today & I’m psyched to use your eggy bananafy method with them( which I LOVE with regular oats!)- turns out they are called pin head oats where I live( no idea why I felt the need to tell you this but I wanted to!).
    Xxx

  22. July 19, 2011 7:48 pm

Woweee girl you sure were busy! I love the necessary pit stop for cantaloupe and hummus and what not. I did that today for greek yogurt!
My life has been so chill lately since it’s the summer, but when i’m in school everything is so rush rush rush. I don’t even get the mornings to relish in the peace and quiet! i’m an early bird, but i usually run first thing. The heat makes it seem less peaceful, but in the perfect cool weather when the sun is just coming up and the birds and grasshoppers are chirping away… nothing can beat it. everyone is still asleep when I get back and I can make my breakfast (but not smoothies!) and enjoy it in peace. It’s so nice!

  23. July 19, 2011 8:07 pm

I like busy days, but not where they are so busy that I have to put things off until the next day. I like crossing all items off of my list each day.

It all depends — sometimes I am an early bird, sometimes a night owl — I like to think of myself as someone in the middle. I don’t stay up super late, but I don’t get up super early either.

  24. July 19, 2011 8:08 pm

I haven’t been to the bookstore in so long! I miss that place.

And I am definitely an early bird. The morning is so peaceful.

  25. July 19, 2011 8:20 pm

I also love the relaxing mornings…But I’m not always an ‘early bird.’ My body is so much like a clock I can only sleep for 8 hours. So when I sleep at 11, I wake up at 7; if I sleep at 10, I wake up at 6.

Days with summer school are way too hectic though. There’s no such thing called “peace” in my mornings anymore. Hopefully though…I’ll get “time on my own” back 🙂

  26. July 19, 2011 8:32 pm

I am a BIG morning person. I love it in the fall when the sun hasn’t risen yet, but I am awake and I get to watch it rise. 🙂

Also LOVE busy days. But NOT always. One or two a week is good for me. But, I hate having lazy days. One a week is good for me. Haha

  27. July 19, 2011 8:41 pm

I do enjoy busy days. Slow days are just that…slow. It’s ok to be lazy for an horu or so, but after that I get realllly anxious to do something.

  28. July 19, 2011 9:17 pm

I am such a morning person. I know exactly what you mean, watching the sunset, making my breakfast, taking my time to just enjoy the moment. It’s so peaceful and prepares me to handle the day ahead of me.
especially when I know I have a busy non stop go go go day ahead of me, I’ll still at least have my relaxing morning.

  29. July 19, 2011 9:19 pm

While I don’t get up crazy early, I always get up early enough so that I can enjoy my breakfast.. it’s my me time. Just like you said, peace and QUIET before a crazy day!

  30. July 19, 2011 9:27 pm

I have a love-hate relationship with busy days. Sometimes being busy overwhelmes me and sometimes being un-busy makes me kind of listless and desperate.

LOVE your book choices… The Alchemist is one of my faves. 🙂 I’ve been reading TONS lately!

  31. July 19, 2011 9:57 pm

I like to be up early, but not as early as you. On occasion Ill sleep in till 10 if I’ve had a late night. I like being busy, I enjoy constantly having something to do. Unless its just stressful.

  32. July 19, 2011 10:00 pm

I am an early bird too which keeps me sane in extremely busy days. Well, not early enough for the Japanese sunrise because it is still before 5 am and I usually don’t get up before 5:30. But even though the sun is already up, I can enjoy my quiet mornings before I jump on the bicycle and go to the university where most days I stay until it is dark outside…

I almost bought “The Art of Racing in the Rain” last year. The dog on the cover is just sooo cute! It is hard to resist 🙂 . And it looks like a really good book, too. Well, I will have to accept the fact that I cannot afford to buy all the books I want and stick to reading the books I have already borrowed. But they are in Japanese… >.<

  33. July 19, 2011 10:07 pm

I am, too, a morning person most definitely. For all the reasons that you just mentioned plus it’s the only time when thoughts can be free before the business of the day settles in.
I love busy days! They’re always filled with something new and extraordinary 🙂

P.S. The Alchemist and Shadow of the wind are both beautiful reads. I haven’t read the other ones on your list, but they look interesting as well!

breakfast totally sets the mood for the day! And I like busy days too, except not stressful busy, but fun, entertaining and accomplishing a lot busy 🙂 Dang girl, sleeping 9:30 – 6… I’m a little jealous I must say, summer school is not allowing me that much sleep : /

  35. July 19, 2011 10:36 pm

I love how quiet and peaceful it is super early in the morning too! though I shouldn’t say that.. bc when I lose the luxury of sleeping in I’m going to possibly wish I had it the other way around! haha! ❤ I'm an early bird sometimes but mostly a night owl… i'm typing this super late at night — so there ya go! haha

  36. July 19, 2011 10:39 pm

I hardly ever get days like that anymore! I totally used to be an early bird but that was only because of my ED. I could never sleep and I never had the energy to go out at night. Now I can stay up all night and long to sleep in to 9 am. It depends on what I’m doing as to whether or not I enjoy busy days 😛 But I kinda like the feeling of walking through the door and wanting to go straight to bed. It ensures a good nights sleep!

Let us know how A Thousand Splendid Suns is!!

  37. July 19, 2011 11:14 pm

I’m definitely a night owl! Going back to waking up early in a month is going to be quite a challenge.

I love busy days because they make me feel super productive. Most summer days I’ve just been sitting around, and I definitely prefer busy days!

  38. July 19, 2011 11:38 pm

The mornings are SO peaceful!! I honestly have no idea what I am!! when i was sick with ed and even still recovering, i thought i was a morning bird. but now that i am freed and going a million miles a minute with my social life, i am such a night owl! I stay up SO late, i dk how but it always happens! So I really have no clue! haha

  39. July 20, 2011 12:38 am

So I like what I see – I’ve read all the books and boy, you got a lot to look forward too ^^

I’m an early bird too. There is something about the peace that fills me with gratitude for being alive. A new day, new possibilities. Just sit and be me, breathe and smile.
To read the paper before the rest of my family wakes up. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but they do make a lot of noise! In a hectic society my mind craves some silence and time by myself.
Night owl not so much though, haha… My mind is normally far away in dreamland before midnight. I blame it on the puzzle word, mental activity makes me tired.

  40. July 20, 2011 12:59 am

I love being up before everyone, means I have the kitchen all to myself 😀
Did you have any luck with finding a new place?! I love house hunting!

  41. July 20, 2011 1:45 am

Early bird fo shiz! My productivity seems to peak before lunchtime. I love busy days, although they seem to zoom by. I don’t know whether that’s a good or bad thing!

  42. July 20, 2011 3:56 am

Oh that sunrise is absolutely beautiful! There’s nothing more gorgeous than sunrises and sunsets in my opinion 🙂
I am definitely an early bird! No matter what time I go to bed I just can’t sleep in. The latest I’ve ever woken up was 9 o’clock and that was only because of jet-lag. I normally get up at 6 too and I love it! And I totally agree, I love busy busy days because it feels like I’ve achieved something in the day.
Good luck with the house hunting – I totally know how you feel, it wasn’t too long ago I was doing the same but it is SO worth it once you get your own place! You will have a kitchen all to yourself!! I love it haha 🙂

  43. July 20, 2011 4:00 am

I’m an early bird! I love getting up at 5am, sitting outside, and listening to the birds. It’s such a peaceful time. I don’t remember the last time I slept in past 6am.
Congrats on looking for a condo that’s really awesome! I’m so happy for you. Hope you ended up with a good night sleep tonight after such a long day 🙂

  44. July 20, 2011 4:27 am

I think I could have almost written this post word for word about me, I agree with everything. I’m such an early bird and love having the time to potter about making breakfast after getting in a good workout, and most of all I love having a few minutes of peace and quiet before my day starts 🙂 Sounds like you had a crazy day, hope you had a nice sleep!

  45. July 20, 2011 5:35 am

I’m crazy out of this world for your book haul, I tend to go a little bananas at bookstores too 😉

  47. July 20, 2011 5:50 am

And once again, everything about this post is just speaking to me… I am an early bird for sure. I love the peace of the morning, the time when I am alone, doing what I want to, enjoying my time- blogging, reading, thinking, whatever.
Thank you for posting this, it helps knowing I am not the only one that lives a crazy life style like this 😀

  48. July 20, 2011 6:05 am

I LOVEEEEe busy dayss!!! oh gosh here im both… go to bed at 1am and get up at 6:30am… hah sooo YEAH i love the nights btu i LOVE the mornings too!

  49. July 20, 2011 6:14 am

Early bird for sure! I love being the only person awake in the morning and being able to enjoy the peace and quiet while eating my breakfast. I actually get a bit grouchy if my parents wake up early and start making noise. I really need that hour to myself every morning! 😛

How did the apartment hunt go? Did you find any possible keepers?

    • July 20, 2011 8:46 am

Yes and no. I saw a lot of places that I loved, but the location was all wrong. Or the location was perfect, but the place was “meh”. I don’t wanna have to settle, so I’m waiting until something really hits me. The real estate agent told me that when I find my perfect place, I’ll know right away. So I’m waiting on that!

  50. July 20, 2011 6:18 am

I agree, there’s nothing better then waking up early, enjoying the morning and not feeling rushed…that sunrise picture is gorgeous! Have a great Wednesday!

  51. July 20, 2011 6:27 am

I love the morning! I can’t stay up that late, but I also can’t get up that early…I think I’m a person that needs at least 9 hours of sleep of else I feel like I’m getting sick.

  52. July 20, 2011 7:07 am

I wish I was up that early! I’m not really a morning person or a evening person. I don’t know what I am…. haha. I am usually very tired when I get up, even when I get enough sleep. I do go to bed very early, around 10.30, so I guess that makes me a morning person after all. I have a hard time sleeping in. I feels like wasting my day!
I love busy days! It makes me feel alive:)

  53. July 20, 2011 7:19 am

An early bird for sure. And here is a warning for you: have tissues ready for when you read ‘A Dog’s Purpose’….you are going to need them!

  54. July 20, 2011 7:46 am

Ah, I love these photos. How beautiful is that sunrise?!

I used to be a night owl, but am slowly changing to an early bird. I also love how quiet things are in the mornings. My favorite thing ever is getting up early, working out and then drinking coffee on the porch. It’s so nice to start the day being calm rather than rushed.

And gosh, you certainly sound like you had quite the busy day today! I prefer being busy most of the time as long as I get a day to take it easy every once in a while. Being busy makes me feel like I’m able to accomplish a lot 🙂
I hope your condo search is going well!

  58. July 20, 2011 8:29 am

definitely an early bird! which kind of became a problem after I got married to a night owl…anyway, we have kind of balanced ourselves through the years but I still enjoy my alone time in the morning 🙂 I love the alchemist!!!

  59. July 20, 2011 9:18 am

I think I’m both an early bird and a night owl… which is a problem, since it means I’m going to be chronically sleep-deprived if I cater to both whims! But morning is preferable, I think — it’s just so much more calm and pleasant.

Busy days are awesome… but only if I’m busy doing something I actually like to do. Otherwise, they kind of suck.

i am a night howl through and through. my body physically won’t let me go to sleep anytime before midnight. in fact, i do my best work at night and enjoy the beautiful silence at the end of the day. i do like a nice mug of black tea in the mornings, though. i think that is definitely one thing mornings have going for them.

  61. July 20, 2011 9:36 am

  62. July 20, 2011 10:10 am

I *used* to be such a night owl! I’d be up till 2 or 3 AM and still wake up well before noon in high school so who knows how I functioned. I don’t even remember ever feeling tired. Im for the most part a early bird! I LOVE early morning: no stress, silence, and getting the most out of the day.
However- I have huge problems getting in bed at night, so I usually end up sleeping 4-6 hours, which is way too little. And then, all of a sudden, I can sleep like forever! Like today, I didnt wake up until 10 am. Makes me feel like Im wasting my day. But the sleep was so much needed!
Have a wonderful day sweetie 🙂 And thank you for your lovely uplifting comments! Means so much!

Busy days are lovely; there’s nothing better than a day when you’re running around so much that you blink and suddenly its dinnertime! I don’t like busy nights, though. I prefer nice, quiet, (now that its summer and I can sleep in) late nights to myself. That’s my “me” time, like you have in the morning. During the school year I do get up early to have my morning “me” time, since I like to be in bed early on school nights because I feel like it gives me a more refreshing sleep. My grandma always said that an hour before midnight is worth three afterwards!

Even though I sleep in now (there’s really no reason to get up… and there’s better TV on at night anyways, lol) I really am a morning person. Once I get into my school routine, 5 AM is a pretty normal wakeup time for me–even on the weekends!

My days are nonstop from 5 AM to 6 PM. Ah the life of a working man who like to workout…

I’m an earlyish bird. I generally wake up between 8-9 no matter what day it is, no matter how late I went to bed and no matter how much time I have to sleep in. Sometimes earlier. VERY rarely later. And I’d much rather get up early than sleep in late. Anytime I accidentally do sleep in I feel way more groggy and like I wasted a whole morning! I love leisurely mornings too, so the earlier I’m up the more leisurely and lovely it can be.

And I also love busy days. I feel SO much better and more alive when I’m out, about and productive the entire day. Unfortunately those days have been few and far between this summer. I’m really looking forward to the time (hopefully SOON) when my relaxed days are the ones that are fewer and more far between. Love leisurely days in their own right, just not when they’re everyday 🙂
