. when one becomes many .

July 1, 2011

July already? Anyone mind telling me what happened to June?

Time needs to stop running at the 5:27 pace, and slow it down to something like 26:32.

Ridiculous. But it is what it is.

And it is the first of July, which means…

… it’s Canada Day!

Yippee!
Happy Birthday, Canadaland. You don’t look a day over 35!

Poor Canada Day always gets squashed by all the excitement over the Fourth of July, but you can bet that there’ll be some feasting and frolicking in the land of ice and snow maple syrup and hockey tonight.

As for me, I’ll be feasting at a BBQ tomorrow afternoon, and frolicking at the fireworks show tonight. That is, assuming I can keep my eyes open past 10 o’clock. I know. I’m hardcore… But not hardcore enough to fend off a mini panic attack when I opened the fridge this morning and realized that I was out of hummus. Luckily, it was nothing a can of chickpeas and a blender couldn’t fix.

Or in my case, a trip to the store…

I won’t lie…

I’m pretty lazy when it comes to making my own hummus. I always mean to – I even have the chickpeas and tahini sitting in my pantry – but it never happens. Part of it is laziness, but I think part of it is also that I’m afraid I won’t like it as much as the storebought kind – I have to admit that I’m pretty smitten with the goodness that Tribe puts out.

And besides… going to the store to pick up one thing gives me the opportunity to pick up a bunch of other things that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them lookin’ all pretty on the shelves…

Almonds – Trail mix – Vitamuffins – Chocolate pudding

Bell peppers – Avocados – Crimini mushrooms – Mixed greens

Frozen mango – Protein powder – Tofu

Kashi Honey Sunshine – Buckwheat honey – Steelies – Popcorn – Chocolate gingersnaps

. – . – . – .

That there is your typical example of the “one becomes many” syndrome. You go to the store to pick up one thing, and come home with many more. This happens to me all. the. time.

In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I walked out of the store with only one thing in my hands… unless you count the trip I made to the coffee shop to pick up just one bag of coffee beans…

… which I did just this morning. And I don’t normally carry coffee beans in my purse – my hands were just full of all the other stuff I bought, and I had nowhere else to put them.

Some might call it a problem, but in my defense, I’ll need all that stuff eventually, so I might as well save myself a future trip to the store and just pick them up while I’m already there, right? Nevermind that I’ll probably be in the store again in a few days anyways. Just… let it go.

And before I go, there’s one more item that I picked up at the store today that I wanted to share with you, because it’s the star ingredient in an upcoming recipe that I’ve been brainstorming.

Hopefully it works out.

Any guesses?

. – . – . – .

Do you suffer from the “one becomes many” syndrome too?

Do you make your own hummus? Tell me I’m not the only lazy one…

I’ve tried to make my own hummus before – didn’t work out so well… I just buy it, haha.

Can’t wait to see what you made!

  2. July 1, 2011 5:28 pm

I’ve made my own hummus before, but like you its never quite like the storebought stuff!! I love my sabra hummus so much, I don’t think I could ever come close to it! And I am horrible at grocery stores. I never seem to be able to stick to my list!

  3. July 1, 2011 5:29 pm

I’ve never tried making my own hummus because I also enjoy the store bought kind too much 🙂 I am a big one becomes too many… That’s my case with cereal anyway.. but you can never be too sure with a boyfriend who can down a box of cereal no problem. and I can’t express my excitement over the possible new recipe that includes cream cheese!!
Happy Canada day to you! Enjoy the fireworks show 🙂

  4. July 1, 2011 5:39 pm

    Happy Canada day!

I have no other option but to make my own hummus now that I cannot find it anywhere but… the can of chickpeas and the tahini are still waiting for me to find my muse 😀 . Until then I will just keep buying the falafel wraps in the university cafeteria from time to time although their hummus isn’t exactly what it is supposed to be.

“One becomes many” is like an infectious disease. That’s why I sometimes prefer to live without “one” for a day or two to avoid the chain reaction.

  5. July 1, 2011 5:39 pm

Happy Canada day fellow Cannuck! haha we buy alot of the same brands I realized! ( Prez Choice frozen fruit-wootwootwoot!) haha I usually buy hummus too. I am thinking oatmeal and cream cheese? idn….I don’t eat cottage/cream cheese that much 🙂 I am excited to see!

  6. July 1, 2011 5:40 pm

    I’VE MISSED YOU!! Aaah your posts=happiness 🙂

Um yes every time I walk into a store with the intention of buying one thing it turns into a THOUSAND! 😛

I have made my own which IS as good as store-bought, but it involves shelling the chickpeas, which I seriously do NOT have the patience for 99% of the time! So Sabra it is, and I’m sure not complaining 😉

  7. July 1, 2011 5:43 pm

    HAPPY CANADA DAY!! lol 😉

I love Tribe hummus too. It has a really mild flavor – you can make it really yummy by mixing it with some chopped dates & cinnamon.

I haven’t tried that brand of Cream Cheese yet (too expensive), I like Liberte’s. All I can think of is Cheesecake…no?

  8. July 1, 2011 5:48 pm

Yay for Canada day my fellow Canadian blogger!

I always end up buying more then just one thing at the grocery store. Especially at the health food store or whole foods! I don’t think I will ever make my own hummus. It’s just so convenient to buy already made and it’s just so tasty! I would probably spoil it if I tried to make it myself 🙂

  9. July 1, 2011 5:53 pm

Oh, you are so not alone! I always find things I “need” when Im out grocery shopping, which is basicly every day 😛
I make my own hummus (havent done it in a while though). Mostly because the dont sell hummus in Norway :O How crazy is that? At least I have never seen any here! And i love home made- with lots and lots and lots of roasted garlic!
But when Ivisit other countries, i live on hummus from the store! They are usually really good too 🙂
    Happy weekend Amanda ❤

  10. July 1, 2011 5:53 pm

My mama being Middle Eastern frequently makes us hummus (and it’s honestly the best ever!) but I tend to buy from Mr. Trader Joe when I’m up living on my own. And boyyyyy do I suffer from one becomes many syndrome 🙂

    • July 2, 2011 6:22 am

I can imagine it’d be absolutely delicious if it were authentic. My family is Polish, so hummus isn’t exactly a traditional food for us hehe.

  11. July 1, 2011 5:55 pm

I read that ‘shroom package as ‘criminal’ mushrooms. Tee hee 🙂 I don’t know why that amused me as much as it did. Possibly because it’s late and I’m tired (or I’m just easily amused…shhh).
I don’t so much suffer from “one becomes many” syndrome, more “walk around and around the shop knowing I’m here for something specific I desperately needed but can’t remember so I’ll just pick up these few things instead” syndrome. I guess that is kind of like one becomes many, only without getting the original “one”. Oops??

  12. July 1, 2011 6:02 pm

Of course I suffer from that syndrome!! But I do actually remember the last time I walked into a store and bought one thing. It was, if I recall, a jar of nutritional yeast. 😉

And I don’t make my own hummus, because *gasp* I hate tahini. And just processing chickpeas? Nah, seems like too much trouble.

    ❤ ❤

  13. July 1, 2011 6:10 pm

Happy Canada Day love! I hope you have a fun night watching fireworks and hope you have a fun day tomorrow at the cookout!

I ALWAYS buy more than I am supposed to! I did it today at the store, I found new things and had to have them, like almond yogurt, its dairy free, soy free, and gluten free! Im excited to see how it tastes!

    Love ya girl! xoxo

  14. July 1, 2011 6:13 pm

omg are you making cheesecake? or banana cupcakes with cream cheese frosting? i LOVE your blog

I am the exact same way when it comes to food shopping. If I know I’m running low on one of my staples, I figure it will save me a future trip (which I inevitably end up making anyway). I even go in with a list of what I actually need & still end up with so many extras. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one! :o)

  16. July 1, 2011 6:34 pm

I’m pretty good about avoiding the “one becomes many” thing now 😛 I used to be the same way, though! I might find one or two fun or sale things, but otherwise I try and behave myself 😉
And I can’t blame you on the hummus thing. I like making it myself sometimes, like my caesar hummus which I love…but usually I’d rather just buy it. Sure, it’s way more expensive…but that’s one thing that I’m okay paying more for 😛
Have fun tonight and at the BBQ tomorrow!

  17. July 1, 2011 6:50 pm

I suffer BAD from the “one becomes many” syndrome. My two biggest instigators are the grocery store and Target! Yesterday I went into the grocery store to pick up apples …. I left with 2 lbs strawberries, 2 pints blueberries, bananas, dinosaur kale, greek yogurt, Manna bread …. oh and apples 🙂

  18. July 1, 2011 6:58 pm

I try to not fall prey to the “one becomes many” but I’m guilty too…something about fresh produce 🙂 Happy Canada day!

  19. July 1, 2011 7:11 pm

Kashi Honey Sunshine is the bestttt!
And I try to pay in cash and don’t carry very much on me unless I’m planning on buying a lot, so I’m usually good about only sticking to what I go in for!
I have made hummus in the past but it is just so. much. easier. to buy it from the store. Plus it comes in great flavors.

  20. July 1, 2011 7:16 pm

Um…I don’t know HOW many times I went to the store because I legit needed one thing (toilet paper, dog food, dish detergent…etc) and I left with…oh, everything BUT.
    Sigh. That may be crazy.

  21. July 1, 2011 7:24 pm

I could NEVER buy one thing at a grocery. EVER. It’s like the saying about potato chips how you can’t have just one haha When I get into places like Whole Foods, I just start mindlessly grabbing things and chucking them in my cart. It’s so dangerous for my wallet!
I’ve never tried making hummus–I think I’m way too lazy and impatient to pass up the store version 😉

  22. July 1, 2011 7:25 pm

Oh jees, now I feel terrible for leaving Canada out with all my fourth of july talk 😛 Happy birthday dear Canada! I shall go eat some dessert now in your honor.

I never make my own hummus, I know I could, but I couldn’t beat the brands I like. Maybe I could, I’d just rather buy it I guess. haha.

  23. July 1, 2011 7:29 pm

    HAPPY CANADA DAY, LOVE!

I have the chickpeas, too, but I never get around to making my own hummus. HAHA! You’re not the only one. Sabre hummus is just too good! I don’t want to waste the ‘peas! Eeeek!

AHHH! I was eyeing that pudding in the store today. Is it good? Well, of course it’s good if you bought it! Silly question. I’ll have to pick some up this weekend!

And yes. YES YES YES I absolutely suffer from “one too many” syndrome. I’m known to go to the store to pick up something I need and wander around picking up things that look delicious. You’d be proud of me, though- today I accompanied my friend to our health food store and resisted temptation, making it out of the store with only a magazine! Three cheers!

  24. July 1, 2011 7:44 pm

I should make my own hummus. I actually have some of the ingredients, but hey – I’m lazy.

  25. July 1, 2011 7:55 pm

Happy Canada Day and have fun at the fireworks! I’m currently listening to fireworks while sitting in bed watching Glee. I feel so unpatriotic! 😛

Haha I can never walk out of the grocery store with just one thing either. I’m always sucked into trying a new product that catches my eye! Kashi Honey Sunshine is one thing I’ve been meaning to try… especially since it looks like Cap’n Crunch, one of my favourite childhood cereals!!!

  26. July 1, 2011 8:25 pm

Happy Canada Day! I have a love/hate relationship with food shopping, because of the one-becomes-many syndrome. love doing it, kind of hate myself after for spending the money!

  27. July 1, 2011 8:51 pm

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve bought the ingredients to make my own hummus, then end up buying some Athenos or Tribe as well, haha! F it, man. Maybe one day, right?

    Happy Canada Day 😀

  28. July 1, 2011 8:56 pm

I definitely suffer from the “one becomes many” syndrome. Especially at Target :). Also, I have never made my own hummus- maybe one day down the line I will, but I like the stuff from the store! Btw, I tried to #FF you on twitter earlier and for some reason it wasn’t letting me…booo… so I’m giving you the love now!

Trader joes hummus is just too good to opt to make my own, although I should since I eat it like its my job. i’m going to guess, cream cheese= cheesecake oats? mmmmm with strawberries, sooo good! I can’t wait to see what it really is for. And the “one item” thing is a joke, I don’t even trick myself into thinking that will ever happen again, no matter what I always buy a ton of stuff. I have come to accept this, however my wallet does not appreciate my multiple trips to the store each week.

  30. July 1, 2011 9:12 pm

why LITE cream cheese, that seems so against what you preach.

I know most people think homemade humus tastes better than store bought….but I just prefer store bought. Sure it may not be as “clean” but the texture is always SPOT on! So creamy and delicious!

Looks like you picked up some great stuff from the store. COCOA GINGERSNAPS!?!?! I need those!!!!

I’ve never made hummus before but ice made PB cookie dough dip with chickpeas 🙂 it was yummy!
And no, you’re not alone. I go crazy in grocery stores. No matter how hard I try, I can not walk out with just the one thing that I actually need!

  33. July 1, 2011 9:46 pm

i’m guessing you’re gonna make cheesecake!

  34. July 1, 2011 9:53 pm

Nooo… I have tahini sitting around too but I just haven’t gotten around to it.
Kashi Honey Sunshine is the BEST!! PERFECT for the summery bowl of cereal! Or yogurt mess, in our case.

  35. July 1, 2011 10:48 pm

    A cheesecake type thing maybe?

I want to make my own hummus but I don’t have a very big food processor (it is actually tiny) and well, I am also scared it will turn out badly. I think it is time I get over that fear.

  36. July 1, 2011 10:58 pm

ughhh I definitely suffer from the one becomes many syndrome. Especially when I go into a drugstore to pick up Tylenol or something and come out with 10 different new Essie nail polishes.

  37. July 1, 2011 11:00 pm

It’s physically impossible for me to go in and buy just one thing from the supermarket! I’ve stopped fighting the urge too now ha!

I once tried making hummus at home but I prefer store-bought, especially the Tribe one..so creamy and delicious!

Whole Foods is always a shopping trap . . . I find what I need and then decide to leisurely browse the aisles “just in case”, and well, my basket suddenly becomes rather heavily, hehehe. As for hummus, my boyfriend makes that for us, and honestly, it is better than anything I’ve had in stores. You should at least try making it once, just to see what you think!

  39. July 1, 2011 11:34 pm

I always buy hummus! So lazy….oh well, Summer Fresh and Sabra are just too darn good! Tooooo good – I go through a tub in a couple of days -yikes!

Are you from Canada?! Me too! 🙂

  40. July 2, 2011 4:38 am

Happy Canada day lovely!! Hope you have a lovely day with your family with lots of lovely food! 🙂
Gosh you got SO much yummy food!! Incredibly jealous…Kashi Sunshine is just amazing ❤ and umm chocolate gingersnaps?! Okay, now I'm definitely coming over and just hoarding your cupboards of everything muahaha! I definitely definitely suffer from that syndrome though. It's so bad. I tell myself 'I'm not going to buy anything else, I don't NEED anything else.' and I still come out with a million other things GAH! I never waste anything though, that's my way of justifying it haha.
I actually never buy hummus! I always make my own maybe because I haven't found one that I'm in love with except when I go to Turkish restaurants and they make it fresh..aaah it's amazing! I like experimenting with flavors too so I don't mind doing it 🙂

  41. July 2, 2011 4:52 am

Happy Canada Day Amanda!!!! Hope you have a great weekend!!
I too suffer from that syndrome – whenever i go shopping i always either find new products or just buy stuff that i just don’t need!!!
I adore hummus but always seem to just buy it made already – it just seems more convenient although homemade hummus is delicious!
Hmmm- cream cheese?? Are you thinking cheesecake oats with hummus??

  42. July 2, 2011 6:22 am

I definitely fall into that trap! I am determined to go in, get what I need, and leave. But that never seems to happen… I end up looking around for other things I just might need 🙂
I buy my own hummus- for sure!

  43. July 2, 2011 6:42 am

I have the worse case of that syndrome. My husband just LOVES that about me….not really. But he knows when I say I have to get one or two things, I’m going to come home with a whole lot more. Impossible – especially at Target.

I love making my own hummus, but usually end up buying it more than making it. I hate cleaning the food processor…and peeling garlic. Those are the main reasons. 🙂

  44. July 2, 2011 6:46 am

Is it for cheesecake??? I usually buy hummus but once in a while I make it, very lemon and peppery. 🙂

Great purchases. I always go to the grocery store looking for one thing and then end up coming out with a whole cart-full! Oops! 😉
I’ve made my own hummus before but still buy store bought most of the time. Tribe is the best! 😀

  46. July 2, 2011 8:18 am

hahaha..my mom and I ROCK at the one becomes many shopping trips. We literally go to the store for a newspaper and come out with over $100 worth of groceries. It’s pretty bad..

I do that all the time! but I feel the same way, that I’ll use the stuff eventually, so it’s not a biggie. So do you put the pudding on your oatmeal? I just bought choco pudding and I’ve been searching for good ways to eat it…

  48. July 2, 2011 10:48 am

Haha yes your definitely not alone there! Bobbing out for milk or soya milk in my case always ends with me coming back with bags and bags! Maybe it’s like I get in the shop grab my milk, get to the till and think ‘nahh surely shopping can’t be this easy… I must have forgotten something!’ 😀

hahah i definitely do that whenever i go to the grocery store! Sometimes I’ll even go in for a bottle of wine and end up with 5+ other things (whooops)
& you make me want to buy pudding..hah, i need to get it soi can recreate your delicious breakfasts!

  50. July 2, 2011 11:44 am

Sometimes I just throw together midday meals that might include salads with eggs, and a side of yogurt with muffin messes!
Easy muffin in one-minute for snacks or to add to meals:

1/4 cup flour (30 g or about 3 tbsps)..i Love Quinoa flour, but buckwheat flour works awesome too..i have to try others yet
1 tablespoon of olive oil (i use a lot of olive oil per day!)
    2 tbsps of liquid
1/4 tsp of baking powder and vanilla extract each
addins: raisins, chocolate chips, walnuts, seeds, etc
    any sweetner amount you desire

pop in microwave for 1 minute (spongy)..1 min 30 for slightly firmer…
top with cream cheese, yogurt/coconut butter, dump n yogurt, etc

also,,,have u ever tried the stonyfield yogurt?
i can’t always afford the real good yogurts…
wondering if these cheaper ones are still good…i am needing to make some deep money cuts

i have no internet access now, except for maybe 20 mins a day at the library…my google reader is like 200…ha…guess i know what i’m eliminating from my life

  51. July 2, 2011 11:58 am

I know I’m a day late, but Happy Canada Day!

Girl, you’re DEFINITELY not the only lazy one 🙂 I totally have chickpeas and tahini sitting in my panty at home too. Every time I pull out the processor I make nut butter instead. And then I’m too lazy to wash it and make hummus then wash it again.

BTW, can I just comment and say thats one fantastic looking shopping trip?? I’ve been craving gingersnaps and chocolate gingersnaps just sound soo good right now.

I’m not sure what you’re up to with the cream cheese, but I can’t wait to find out!! 🙂

  52. July 2, 2011 12:17 pm

Happy Canada Day! I must admit I had no idea :0

and I am TOTALLY guilty of the one becomes many thing! Like…. every time I go to the grocery 😉

    hope your day was awesome!

  53. July 2, 2011 1:58 pm

I like tribe hummus too much to try my own!

  54. July 2, 2011 2:22 pm

I massively suffer from that syndrome too! I just can’t help myself, especially with fruits and veggies on offer! I usually make my own hummus (I make a ‘high protein’ hummus with soya beans) but the last couple of day’s I’ve bought it, I’ve had an amazing sweet chilli hummus and my first tub of sabra!

  55. July 2, 2011 4:09 pm

I am the SAME WAY when it comes to hummus! i’m so scared mine wont be good! but i’m desperate to try it out one of these days.. just everytime I think of trying I say “nah… today is not the day!” haha

    happy canada day darling!

  56. July 3, 2011 4:03 am

Happy Canada day! What a cool holiday – does everyone get time off from work?
I never make my own hummus either – bar ONE recipe (Ashley Edible Perspective curry hummus…oh, and Katie Nourishing Flourishing Cinnamon Dessert Hummus) store bought is just better. I don’t know how they do it!
HAHA I suffer terribly from one becomes many syndrome! It’s an awful, expensive illness! I don’t plan on ridding myself of it though, I quite like it…
Chocolate ginger snaps?? i’ll take two bags please.

  57. July 4, 2011 8:34 am

Girl, I am right there with you! The last time I went to the store for bananas, I came home with a sweet potato, cottage cheese, cereal, and tofu…oh and I didn’t forget the bananas, thank God! I seriously hate it when THAT happens! Haha!

I’ve made my own hummus before…I like making my own hummus (it’s fun to mix up the flavors and whatnot)…but I have been SO lazy lately! Last week I even added stuff to a store bought plain hummus which is essentially the same thing as making my own…only a lot more expensive! Ugh!
