. saturday shopping and some staples .

June 25, 2011

Someone has stolen my sunshine…

It was here when I went to bed last night (no it really was… stupid overly long summer days), and nowhere to be found this morning…

Le boo.

The only solution for such a dreary start to the day? Comfort food all the way…

Tiramisu Oats… made by adding a Tbsp. of cream cheese, a Tbsp. of carob powder, and a tsp. of instant coffee granules to my regular steel cut oaties… then topping with banana slices and almond butter.

Mmm… I was comforted… and also going a little stir crazy. So, after spending some time curled up on the couch with my new favorite book:

… followed by 3 miles on my not-so-favorite dreadmill, I popped one of these babies in my mouth, made myself semi-presentable, and headed out the door.

Where did I go?

… with “here” being the local farmer’s market.

I always get a bit jealous when I see some of the amazing farmer’s markets that other bloggers have in their city. Ours is… okay… but it’s nothing to brag about. Unless you like weeds plants…

Which I clearly do.

Or bagels…

Which I’ve honestly never cared much for.

Or beef…

Which I’ll spare you the gory details of.

And if none of that strikes your fancy, then perhaps beets, potatoes, rhubarb, or carrots will.

Actually, the carrots should – the carrots are amazing.

So, even though I had to drive all the way across the city only to come home with a 6 lb. bag of carrots, the trip was totally worth it. These carrots rock my world.

But man woman cannot survive on carrots alone (believe me, I once tried…), so my next stop was the grocery store, where I restocked on some staples that I was getting dangerously low on.

And by dangerously low I mean less than 5 servings left – I don’t like to cut it too close…

Baked lentil chips — Cinnamon Puffins — Raisins — Steel cut oats

Salsa — Canned pumpkin — canned beans (kidney & chickpeas) — Roasted almond butter

Kombucha — Cottage cheese — Greek yogurt (strawberry & plain) — Vanilla almond milk — Eggs

And, finally, the most important purchase of all…

Five and a half lbs. of bananas

I was down to only 2 bananas after this morning’s breakfast, which is basically a Code Red situation in this house. There are certain foods that I can’t refuse to live without, and bananas are one of them. Oats, chocolate, coffee, yogurt, almond butter, eggs, hummus, and salsa are a few others. Sure, it wouldn’t kill me to go without them for a day or two (three would be pushing it), but why would I do that?

To prove that I was a masochist?

Well I’m not. So, rain or shine, blizzard or torrential downpour, my butt will be making a trip to the grocery store if my staples start running low. What can I say? I like to eat what I like to eat.

. – . – .

What’s one food you ALWAYS have to have on hand?

What are three things you bought the last time you went shopping? (it doesn’t have to be food)

  4. June 25, 2011 5:28 pm

olive oil, peanut butter, oateaml. Haha 🙂 I just bought black beans, portabello mushroom caps, local raspberries nomnomnomnom. Our farmers market isnt veryy good either, but I usually love the apples I get there. 🙂 its always fun to go though!

  5. June 25, 2011 5:28 pm

Tiramisu oatmeal?! WOAH!! Love it!! And YAY for NROLFW!! 😀

Haha and my ‘must have’ list is SO similar to yours!! Definitely couldn’t live without chocolate, oats, bananas or nut butter! 😀

Last thing I bought…MORE CARAMEL PUDDING WOOOO!!!

  6. June 25, 2011 5:41 pm

PEANUT BUTTER!!! I am getting low right now and you betcha I will be at the store first thing tomorrow morning!

  7. June 25, 2011 5:42 pm

ahhh, your farmer’s market looks awesome, though!! as does the tiramisu oatmeal. holy moly.
and you and i both re: bananas. i can be totally okay running out of almost anything,, but when I’m out of bananas you bet i make it a point to stop at the store! same goes for milk. anything else is just added to the shopping list for the next time it’s convenient.

  8. June 25, 2011 5:45 pm

Oh bagels, how I love thee 😉

  9. June 25, 2011 5:46 pm

Must always have asparagus, onions, Nutritional Yeast….the rest could probably wait a day.
But really? I could elaborate. Salsa, peanut butter, hummus…I may be able to lat a day though.
Thanks for giving me no-guilt ammo. I tend to get guilty about food shopping so often.
I really like the “why would I go without? To prove I’m a masochist?”

    Sending sunshine wishes your way!

  10. June 25, 2011 5:48 pm

your farmer’s market looks a lot better than ours! Those bagels look amazing.
I also need to have bananas as a staple. I am not okay with running out of fresh bananas. I will go out of my way to buy bananas! Also cereal is a staple. I cannot run out of cereal
The last 3 things I bought were: melons, cantaloupe, and kashi cereal 🙂

  11. June 25, 2011 5:52 pm

Bananas are definitely on my must-have-always list. Chocolate, too. And oats (when I’m in the states) and fresh coconut (when I’m in the Philippines).
Why dreadmill? No outdoor running today?

  12. June 25, 2011 5:58 pm

It seems like it’s my turn to offer some sunshine. But I’m warning you – the tropical sun is insanely hot 🙂 .

Baked lentil chips sounds amazing. As a lentil lover I am very interested. The fact that I had to go round the whole city to find any kind of lentils makes me even more jealous.

I freak out if I don’t have yogurt, bananas and oats. Bread is also hardly ever absent.

Grocery shopping wasn’t in my plan at all last night but it was so damn hot that I made a tiny detour of my way and went to the closest air-conditioned supermarket. Needless to say, I left with a full bag of goodies. The buys I’m most proud of are decaf coffee (amen!), light mayo (I’ve been looking for something like this for months) and rose-scented Herbal Essences shampoo (I hope it’s good…). But chocolate went in the basket, too 🙂 .

  13. June 25, 2011 6:03 pm

oooh la la – Tiramisu oats? That sounds amazinggg! That would brighten up any day of mine for sure 🙂

I saw baked lentil chips when I went grocery shopping yesterday and I was debating whether or not to buy them. Alas I didn’t 😦

I think the one thing I ALWAYS have on hand is oats. I can never run out of those 🙂 I actually JUST went grocery shopping and only bought a total of three things (how perfect! haha)…brown rice puffs, Mom’s Best toasted wheat puffs, and unsweetened almond milk.

  14. June 25, 2011 6:15 pm

I’m with you on the bananas, I always make sure there’s at least 2-3 ripe ones.
Apples, cereal, oats, and milk are must-have’s as well.
last 3 things i bought? jewelry for prom, nail polish, and coffee!

  15. June 25, 2011 6:22 pm

I always have bananas on hand. Peanut Butter and Oats are other staples we always have on hand.

  16. June 25, 2011 6:34 pm

I always need to have peanut butter and dark chocolate of some sort :). The last time I was at the store, I got oats, greek yogurt, bananas, and salad makings!

  17. June 25, 2011 6:41 pm

I’m SO jealous of your farmer’s market, it’s like a mecca!! 😀 If I don’t have cottage cheese, apples, carrots, and pb in my fridge, I literally keel over on the spot haha

  18. June 25, 2011 6:46 pm

I can’t go without bananas either. I bought some today! And I ALWAYS have baggies of frozen bananas in my freezer. By the way, the idea of adding cream cheese to oats has been on my radar for a while now, so it’s a funny coincidence that you just did that! I don’t know if I’ve seen any other bloggers do that.

Oh, and I must get that book! I’m actually a certified personal trainer, so I feel like it’s somewhat necessary for me to see what the fuss is all about. If there are new rules for lifting…that’s something I gotta know!

Amanda, your posts always brighten my day 🙂 I always just love reading them, and you take amazing pictures.
The one food I always have on hand is probably almond milk. There have been many days when I have walked all the way to the store, in the rain, to get it.
My last food purchases: eggplant, plums, bamboo shoots and sorbet.

  20. June 25, 2011 6:57 pm

Tiramisu oats! What a great idea! Usually bananas, peanut butter and oats are staples on my grocery list. But I’m going to pick up some instant coffee on my next trip so I can give these oats a try!! 🙂

  21. June 25, 2011 6:59 pm

I’m so jealous of your trip to the farmer’s market! Now that I work at the farm every day that the farmer’s market takes place, I never get to visit it anymore. I miss it! 😦

Haha I’m really neurotic about my food staples as well. I always HAVE to have bananas, soy nut butter, and oats. I have definitely made 11 pm trips to the grocery store before just to buy more bananas for the next morning haha!!

  22. June 25, 2011 7:01 pm

I always have: bananas, peanut butter, almond butter, rolled oats, and kashi!!! 🙂

  23. June 25, 2011 7:03 pm

I feel the same way about bananas! I have to have them. All. the. time.

last 3 things I bought: strawberries, almond milk, rolled oats. All essentials in my book!

  24. June 25, 2011 7:04 pm

if i don’t get my daily dose of activia, my stomach hates me. for days. but yogurt in general is a staple in my diet, i have it at least once daily (funny, considering i won’t drink milk).

i love making oatmeal taste like all my favorite things. i made german chocolate oats once, which this post reminded me of. maybe tomorrow i’ll make some fancy oatmeal 🙂

my last shopping trip got me a new laptop case, a movie ticket, and a vanilla skinny cow sandwich 🙂

  25. June 25, 2011 7:06 pm

Your farmers market actually looks way nicer than mine. Mine is teeny tiny, because I live in a eiity bitty town. But they do have some pretty good vegetables, so I can’t complain.

My staples are eggs, bread, nut butter (usually salted almond), and baby carrots. Give me those things and I’m set. 🙂

The last thing I bought was a running outfit!

  26. June 25, 2011 7:24 pm

Hope the sun is shining nonrigid for you tomorrow!
I too must always have bananas in my house! Other must have staples coffee, hummus, berries. But my list could go on forever!
Hope you have a great Sunday!
By the way those lentil chips sound interesting – have you tried them before?

  27. June 25, 2011 7:49 pm

I’m sorry the world stole your sunshine – and I hope you get it back! 🙂

I love those Lentil Chips! I get them from Costco in a huuge bag!

  28. June 25, 2011 7:56 pm

Peanut butter and bananas, bananas, bananas! But how in the world do you keep five and a half pounds of bananas good long enough to eat them all? I’m fiercely opposed to mushy bananas!

    • June 26, 2011 6:19 am

Haha! I eat a lot of bananas. And when they start getting a little riper, I bake with them or cut them into chunks and freeze them for smoothies.

  29. June 25, 2011 7:57 pm

I’m sort of a coffee nut… I need to mess with a tiramisu oats combo myself! This looks so good!

It sort of cracks me up how much we have in common- our staples, even!

Hmm, I ALWAYS need my oats. I love having different oat combos for breakfast every morning! So everything that goes along with that. Rolled oats, stevia, almond milk, and whatever mix-ins! Nut butter FOR SURE! Ooh, and tofu. And bread. Ok I’ll stop 😉

Three things I bought last: a spark (!), a bento box (!!!!!), and well, another spark! WOOO!

2 bananas is a red flag, haha! It’s the same way for me, I cannot live without bananas. There was one time I found out I was out and went in negative degree weather. My staples are lettuce, bananas, soy milk, nut butters and peppers. I have to run to the store again tomorrow to stock up on staples and eats for the week.

  32. June 25, 2011 8:15 pm

On hand I need, oatmeal, salsa, carrots, apples, almond milk, peanut butter, veggie burgers!!! Wow, I need a lot of food at all times! CODE RED on the bananas? I can relate. We went on a banana run at 10pm one night so we had bananas for our oats in the morning, sickness?

  33. June 25, 2011 8:29 pm

Oh I HAVE to have bananas!!! And waffles or some sort of cereal. Oh, and yogurt. I’m kinda high maintenance..he.

  34. June 25, 2011 8:45 pm

Those oats look soooo good! I used to hate coffee-flavored anything (crazy I know) but now I love it so I may have to try those as an overnight oats combo.
I always need some kind of fruit, oats, almond butter, Greek yogurt and Medjool dates. But I’m sure I could come up with a few more!
Three things I recently bought: freeze dried fruit, granola and a pair of shorts from online.

  35. June 25, 2011 9:01 pm

Yum tiramisu oats sound so tasty! I always have to have apples on hand, they would be top on my list of ‘must have in house’. Other items making the list would be yogurt, oats, puffed kamut, and salsa 🙂

Lentil chips sound pretty interesting!! And how delicious do those tiramisu oats look?! Such a genius idea 🙂 I live carrots, I go through huge bags of carrots in the speed of light 🙂 But I agree, you cannot live only on them 🙂 And I have to say that I didn´t steal your sunshine, because there is nothing like sunshine around me for the last couple of days :))
I cannot live without oatmeal, so oats are probably my one staple I cannot survive the day without 🙂
The last time shooping, I bought apples, tahini and cantaloupe 🙂

just found your blog and love it!
um i CANNOT survive witout oats…and pb. period. and then apples. i have an odd obsession with apples…they are a MUST at least once every day

  39. June 25, 2011 10:23 pm

Oh I cannot survive without oats. Nope. I actually do not know what I would do if I didn’t have any………probably run around screaming like a mad thing! Nah actually I think I *might* survive that horrific ordeal but I don’t like to think about it. Oh and green tea!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t go a day without having at least one cup of green tea!!

Funnily enough on our last shopping trip, I bought butter and yoghurt. 😛

  40. June 25, 2011 10:45 pm

I always like to have some kind of: nut butter, oats, almond or soy milk, and coffee. Oh, and organic pink lady apples – specific, but so delicious! Also, I’d probably be pretty torn if we ran out of bananas.

Oats, soymilk, nut butter of some sort, sweet potatoes, kale, sauerkraut, chickpeas, apples, couscous, and dark chocolate. These are probably my most essential staples. ❤

  42. June 25, 2011 11:19 pm

Um we did the same thing today. I wish I was talking about the Tiramisu oats, but I’m talking about the FM followed by the regular grocery. I think our FM is great! Every week I put rhubarb on the list and chicken out. $5 for something I have no idea if I’ll even like? I can’t bring myself to do it. I also got chunky peanut butter, bananas and a watermelon, which I was particularly excited about.

  43. June 26, 2011 4:25 am

Haha, we are clearly very similar girls! I bought a lot of food yesterday on top of my big Friday shop. The only place I can get tofu and tempeh is in the city so when I’m there I stock up! As for essentials I can’t live without, apples, some form of leafy green, frozen bananas, dark chocolate and oats. I get a panic attack just thinking of running out of this stuff!

  44. June 26, 2011 4:37 am

LENTIL CHIPS?? Whaat??? I need those in my life!
I am 100% with you on the bananas – I always have to have a frozen stash of overripe beauties. Them, and apples, and oats, and parsnips. My staples!
Three things I bought…running socks, cappuccinos, shorts, a watch, dresses….:p

  45. June 26, 2011 4:53 am

Aww girly you look so cute haha! And wow your oats sounds AMAZING – as always!!
And seriously, I am coming to your house to get those Puffins. GAH I miss them!!! 😦
I’m actually really lucky to live in a city that just has the most fantastic market ever. I have so much cheap fresh fruit and veg available to me Monday – Saturday and I just live there. Everyone knows me who works at all the stalls because I’m there literally everyday! I couldn’t live without it!
I don’t think I could chose one food that I couldn’t live without because there are too many: kabocha squash, persimmons, cereal, greek yogurt, PB, dried fruit..I would seriously die if I didn’t have these lol.
Last three things I bought: kabocha squash, a skirt and a magazine 🙂

  46. June 26, 2011 5:10 am

Apples!! can’t go a day without them! 😀
I went shopping yesterday with my mum and bought pyjamas, underwear and a rain jacket!!hahah!

  47. June 26, 2011 7:11 am

I always need apples, almonds, and berries in the house! Staples for me, and I feel quite lost without them 🙂

  48. June 26, 2011 7:19 am

hey 🙂 hmm bananas. i have panic attacks if i don’t :/ gahhh i like having different stages of ripeness, which means if i go away or for some reason they ripen at the same time the kitchen starts to really smell ;( anddd..unsweetened applesauce, coffee, almonds…cereal (cold and hot but esp cold cereal like multigrain squares)…probably some more things, ohh herbal tea. peppermint. but if im low on that i also have chamomile and sleepytime (celestial seasonings brand)…i guess i like to have a lot of “staples” not sure if they’re considered that, but to me they are. i likely forgot a bunch 😛 xox

  49. June 26, 2011 7:29 am

troooof: I’ve never had Tiramisu. Ever. Nor have I gone to a farmer’s market. Are you judging me? I can’t blame you.

I always need PB (though recently it’s been AB) in my life. It’s my vice.

Last three purchases = a few swaggy dresses at TJmaxx. I’ll be dominating the grocery store today though. Chyeaaaa.

  50. June 26, 2011 7:53 am

I know where your sunshine is…
Its in England, which is suprising seriously it is so unbelievably hot today, which doesnt happen very often I can assure you.

I think I may also share your love of carrots mmm 😀

Hope you have a great day. ❤

Ok quick question… Why do three miles on the “dreadmill” if you don’t enjoy it? Honestly just wondering!!

    • June 26, 2011 8:35 am

‘Cause I feel great afterwards, and I love to run 😀 I just prefer doing it outside, so having to keep it inside because of nasty weather is always kind of a bummer.

  52. June 26, 2011 10:11 am

My list of essentials is pretty much the same as yours! Plus mushrooms and spinach. 🙂
Your breakfast looks yummy! I’ll have to make that soon!
Last thing I bought? Farmer’s Market yesterday: 4 hair bows, some cherry tomatoes that taste like candy, baba ganoush, and red, orange, and yellow bell peppers!
I hope you have a great day!

  53. June 26, 2011 12:31 pm

Oh no! I think it was me who stole your sunshine. But in my defence, I’ve not had any for weeks, and I’m super-appreciating it? …Okay, I’ll give it back tomorrow. Promise.

  54. June 26, 2011 1:07 pm

I love your staples; such good taste! I always get jealous at other bloggers’ farmers’ markets, too. We don’t have on around here… its basically Walmart, Food Lion, or Publix (if you’re richer than I am, lol…) My number one staple… would probably be cocoa powder! I go through that stuff like water. By default, my other two must-haves are cottage cheese (for chocolate cheesecake) and eggbeaters (for microwave cakes.) I have those things like every day!

I just bought almond milk for the first time in a LONG time yesterday. I had it this morning in my cereal, and it was actually much better than I remembered! Maybe its because this time I bought the vanilla instead of the original flavor? Unsweetened either way, of course…

Oh, and I just stopped at Walmart on the way home from cleaning my mom’s shop. They had a new flavor of Ben and Jerry’s, so I picked that up!

  55. June 26, 2011 1:19 pm

Oh, why cant we have farmers markeds in Norway too? They look like so much fun! 🙂
I need to have dark chocolate in my apartment. If i dont, I crave it like CRAZY! I crave it every day anyway, but if I cant have it, I want it even more and cant think of anything else 😛
Can I say 3 fun things I have bought lately instead, even though its not the last? My running shoes (<3), a super cute purple summer dress, and tomorrow Ill be buying my very own Michael Kors bag 😀 I cant wait!!

  56. June 26, 2011 1:55 pm

I have to have fruit with me! Always, if nothing else at least an apple. Though I am NOT a fan of pears. I just can’t seem to get any of that juicy taste that I always want out of it.

And I have a question, I doubt you still count calories, but do you have a good estimate of how much you eat on your non-workout days?

    • June 26, 2011 3:16 pm

You’re right – I don’t count and it’s too hard to keep track of all the random nibbling I do throughout the day, but my guess would be around 2500.

  57. June 26, 2011 2:12 pm

Hope the sun comes back out soon!!! 😀
I always love to have oats (they even sell oats w/ cocoa powder already mixed in here!), apples, bananas and peanut butter!!!!

My 3 foods that I panic if I don’t have at my house is peanut butter, oatmeal, and ice cream. I eat them every single day. The last time I went shopping (went today)I bought granola bars, gum, ice cream, and chocolate milk. 🙂

  59. June 27, 2011 6:13 am

toss that can of pumpkin my way! I need to make your tortilla pizza and some pumpkin muffins for the marine’s at work! mwah!

  60. June 27, 2011 3:21 pm

    Staples: bananas, pb and spinach!

  61. June 27, 2011 4:32 pm

bananas and coffee are for sure staples for me as well 🙂 And some type of cereal and yogurt as well 😉
