. WIAW… round two .

May 18, 2011

Hey hey! 😀 Today is what is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week (right behind Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) – Wednesday! And you know what that means – it’s time for another edition of…

Yipee!

Honestly, it’s getting kind of ridiculous how much I’m starting to look forward to WIAW’s. I really enjoyed the first one I did last week, and I always love coming across them on other blogs, so I’m pretty sure this is going to become a weekly thing for me. Thanks Jenn!

. – . – . – .

I always wake up around 5:30-6, and the very first thing I do (after the requisite trip to the bathroom, of course) is get started on breakfast. I’m super picky when it comes to my oats, and my favorite (steel cut) take a bit longer to prepare, so I get those going and make myself a cup of tea while I’m at it. Bam.

Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice

Then I go off to spend some time on the computer or yoga mat, and before I know it, breakfast. is. served.

A mix of steel cut/Scottish oats, banana, honey, and roasted almond butter.

Anyone who skips breakfast? Craaaaaaazy.

The morning just happens to be my favorite time to work out, but I’m definitely not one of those people that can do it on an empty stomach (seriously, how do you guys manage?!). So, after letting breakfast digest for a bit, it’s time to get some exercise in, depending on what I’m feeling up for that day…

[insert 45 minute bike ride and random jumble of core/ab work here]

Then? More food! It’s weird. Exercise basically kills my appetite, and I don’t usually find myself hungry right afterwards. Still, I know my body needs the fuel, so I grab something that goes down easy…

… like a chocolate protein smoothie & Cookie Dough Ball (yes, I have a problem)

My mind is running blank as to what I did after that, so let’s just pretend it was something productive and move right along to lunch, shall we? I’m not a huge fan of pasta, but I got hit by a random noodle craving this afternoon, which led to this bowl of goodness being born:

Egg white noodles mixed with olive oil, marinara sauce, and hummus, accompanied by a bowl of cottage cheese mixed with nooch and a salad. Note: that laughable spit of salad is only there to represent the bigger-than-my-head bowl of salad that I actually had… it just didn’t look as pretty.

Mmm. Tasty; and I think I’m good on pasta for the next, oh, 3 months? Like I said, not the biggest pasta fan, but a trip to Italy might change my mind, just in case anyone is offering 😉

Sometime after lunch (or maybe it was during?)I realized that I’d been neglecting housework for… quite some time, and that my place had consequently fallen into a state of orderly disorder. That being the case, I spent most of the afternoon doing various chores that I hate-but-at-the-same-time-kinda-enjoy [read: vacuuming, dusting, laundry, tidying], and worked up quite the appetite while I was at it.

Greek yogurt with banana and trail mix (sunflower seeds, dried apple, raisins, chocolate chips)

I don’t know about you guys, but housework makes me hungry. I can run 3 miles or spend an hour at the gym and be perfectly fine, but 20 minutes of vacuuming and I’m ready to gnaw my arm off. So, in order to keep all my appendages in tact, I snacked the afternoon away.

Cranberry Kombucha & Cocoa Ginger Snaps

When dinner time rolled around, the very last thing I wanted to do was spend more time in the kitchen cooking an elaborate meal, so I grabbed the first things that sounded good, threw them together in a haphazard way, and called it done… In and out in under 15 minutes (TWSS!… Sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Mutigrain toast topped with cottage cheese and jam; 2 fried eggs & broccoli with feta cheese.

Apparently, I also called my laptop/the floor a table, but that’s neither here nor there at this point. And now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a beautiful evening and a little pooch calling my name, so I’m gonna inhale what’s left of dinner, unplug for a bit, and go for a leisurely stroll. Lots of love until tomorrow.

. – . – . – .

Are you always hungry after you exercise?

Do you enjoy WIAW’s?

I’m definitely hungry after working out – dance practice is fun but exhausting!

  2. May 18, 2011 5:49 pm

I feel you on not being hungry right after I workout or run – but they say getting carbs/protein back in the body within 30 minutes so I get something down! All of your food looks really good…i’ve never had egg white noodles, would love to give them a go, though!

    I don’t exercise 😦
Brings me to tears. Sorry , just hard to deal with.
What kind of cottage cheese do you like?
Have you tried either Nordica? Organic Meadow? or Western?
I’m always not sure of the best kind for a girl whose dairy
intake is addictive (but not settling well – yet too stubborn to give it up, ha 🙂

god, I wish I could reach your head space.
physical energy, positivity, motivation, love of food, comfort, no fear…I’m so far in that its so hard to know how to climb out .

    • May 18, 2011 8:07 pm

I’ve tried a bunch of different ones, but my favorite is Organic Meadows 2%.

And you’ll get there hun. But you have to push yourself each day and resist the temptation to slide backwards. It gets a lot worse before it gets better, and you have to tough that period out.

        Thanks.
        Its hard Amanda.
Its like its been incredibly long without exercise. I literally just sleep or sit all day. It may be more because of my depression. But low weight has to count for something , right?
I will push myself I must. Its just so difficult knowing that I simply sleep or sit all day. And Amanda , I am so so low weight, that it might be so very very long before I can ever exercise again (IF I can again). I really have to stop being so whiny I know.
I WISH I could eat like you. I wish I knew the easiest, simplest, and best digestible snack and meal combinations for someone who is literally at a starting gate of it all, u know?
The organic meadows 2%: I’ll try that sometime (there is one in a tub and one that is “dry pressed”). I’ve heard good things about Nordica too.
In terms of cream cheese, I’ve seen an “Arla” brand or an organic meadows one I might try sometime soon too.
When you recovered right from the beginning, were the foods you ate still along the same lines as when you were low low weight? Like did you still eat that way that you show here or whatever, but you just increased portions and then GRADUALLY introduced new htings? Or were you eating entirely different and then suddenly switched to something else?

Great WIAW! Such a fun thing isn’t it?! I always love when bloggers post snacks because I literally snack every two hours. I just had one (ok, two) of your cookie dough protein balls, actually! SO GOOD.

    • May 18, 2011 8:08 pm

Omigosh I think I did a horrible thing when I made those cookie dough balls because it seriously brought out the cookie monster in me. Ridiculous how fast I go through those things…

  5. May 18, 2011 6:20 pm

I tend to be not hungry for about 30 minutes after exercise…but if I don’t eat within that time frame, boom! My sugar level goes rock bottom – I can actually “feel” it – and I get seriously ravenous.
For me, interestingly, I seem to get hungrier the day after I work out. In addition, I tend to crave protein more on my workout days, and then more carbs on the other days. I guess that’s just me..lol!
p.s. About the WIAW, I sometimes cringe when I see few bloggers that obviously eat like….1500kcal a day…I mean, it often makes me feel like I’m eating too much or something. I love yours though!

I am the same way! I mentioned the ‘hungrier the day after’ thing to my physiotherapist the other day and he just looked at me like I was a weirdo.

  6. May 18, 2011 6:22 pm

I’m never hungry right after I workout, but about an hour later I am a famished beast!
I enjoy the WIAW, it’s great to see what a healthy, flourishing, happy person eats, you are very inspirational!

  7. May 18, 2011 6:25 pm

Oh my lanta your oatmeal looks so good! I just love oats with nut butters, it makes my whole day start off perfectly! 😀 I’m also loving the cottage cheese on the toast–that’s one of my all-time favorite combos. Have you ever tried a peanut butter, cottage cheese sandwich? AHH I could eat them all day haha 😛

I am rarely hungry right after a workout, which makes things difficult, especially after a long run! The other day I ran 10 miles and didn’t feel hungry so I took a bath…lo and behold by the end of it I thought I would throw up because my blood sugar was so low! I think, like you, the best option for me is to have a little something soon after, even if I don’t necessarily feel famished.

  9. May 18, 2011 6:37 pm

I’m so glad you liked the video I posted. It really changed the way I think about some things. I love all your pics, especially the breakfast ones since breakfast is my favorite. TO answer the question…it really depends on the workout I do. I’m usually never hungry right after running, but give it an hour or so and I’m ready for a stack of pancakes and pb. Every time I swim I’m hungry right when I get out of the pool, no matter how far I swam.

  10. May 18, 2011 6:43 pm

I get hungry during working out sometimes, which s when I stop but then when I get home it vanishes and when it returns? Watch out.
Thanks for the reminder about eating anyway.

I still think you have the prettiest oats in blog-town and I REALLY cannot wait to see your beautiful pooch! I miss that face.

    • May 18, 2011 8:11 pm

Aww! You remembered her! (she says thank you). I probably have to show her adorable mug around here sometime soon before she gets peeved and starts plotting something diabolical.

  11. May 18, 2011 6:58 pm

I’m loving WIAWs, too! I think not doing the daily eats thing anymore makes it more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. I guess showing the same (okay, similar) bowl of breakfast and some sort of sandwich for lunch just got old. Go figure.
Re: pasta – I’m the same! I’ll go without it for weeks and then all of a sudden, I NEED pasta. Those noodles look really good – I’ve actually never had the real, fresh pasta. I’m sure that would make me a pasta freak, though 😉
And housework revving up the appetite? Uh, yes. I will be totally fine at work, then vacuum and about want to eat my own arm, too. And practically sweating. Tell me how that makes sense.
    It doesn’t.

  12. May 18, 2011 7:14 pm

Seriously, who DOES skip breakfast and why??! Sadly, us breakfast eaters are few and far between. Maybe someday the masses will learn the wonderfulness that is breakfast!!!

  13. May 18, 2011 7:18 pm

You know that white bowl you used a breakfast? I have the same one! I agree: anyone who skips breakfast = Crazy

  14. May 18, 2011 7:19 pm

Looove wiaw…need to do one of my own! And you’ve seriously got me craving a protein shake.

  15. May 18, 2011 7:25 pm

Not-pasta-freaks unite! I don’t particularly enjoy the stuff either :). I am going to do my first WIAW tonight! I don’t really get hungry after exercise– unless it’s the time I would normally be ready for a meal (like 3-4 hours after I ate last or something)– nor do I need to eat right after. What exercise does for me is move my digestion smoothly through and facilitate my appetite better. My blood sugar stays surprisingly constant throughout the whole day, regardless of when I exercise! I eat WAYYYY more on days AFTER extra intense exercise though.

I just found your blog the other day and love your writing style and personally! I think you are so strong and amazing for puling yourself out when you were so far in an ED. You look like you have come a great distance since then!

    Love, VEGirl

  16. May 18, 2011 7:48 pm

I can’t even think of what would happen if I skipped breakfast. it is my favorite meal! Sometimes I have breakfast for breakfast and lunch!!
I tend not to be hungry after I work out but give me about 30 minutes I will begin to hear some grumbles. Like you though, housework makes me hungry!!
    what is TWSS??

  17. May 18, 2011 7:49 pm

Hi beautiful! Even though Im crazy busy , I had to pop by some of my loves blogs and say hello!!!! U are one of them!!!!

    How is your week?!

Love that you joined WIAW, I was just commenting on another blog friends blog that did it too, I am going to do that one wednesday soon! After the wedding! ha!

LOVE the kombucha! I bought strawberry serenity today!!!

Love ya girl! Happy week to you!!!!!!!! xoxo

    • May 18, 2011 8:56 pm

EEE! So good to hear from you, hun! Love you for stopping by to say hi! And I’m sooo crazy excited for you for the wedding. Can’t wait to hear all about it. It’s gonna be diva-licious for sure 😉

  18. May 18, 2011 7:59 pm

wow those are some serious good eats! im not really hungry after i work out but always remember to re-fuel. i wish i could work out in the morning ON A FULL STOMACH! i wouldn’t be able to run very long if i did that so i usually eat after my weekend morning runs!

    I have a botanic no 6 in m fridge 😉

  19. May 18, 2011 8:20 pm

I’m always hungry after working. Starving. Basically ruins the working out lol.

Your meals always look so good and creative!

  20. May 18, 2011 8:40 pm

For me, intense hunger strikes around an hour or two after exercising but never immediately after. I’m also not a huge pasta fan- but sometimes if I see a realllllly glorious recipe or photo (Foodporrndaily ahem), I can be tempted. Oh and in Italy the pasta is a completely different story 😉

  21. May 18, 2011 8:44 pm

You weren’t kidding when you said your breakfast was amazing 😉 I love it! And yes I am not a breakfast skipper, I love it too much.

I’m never hungry after my workouts either, it just kills my appetite 😦 Cocoa gingersnaps? I want!

  22. May 18, 2011 9:22 pm

I’m usually not hungry right after exercise, but about 30 min after I’m STARVED! Btw, I made your protein cookie dough (with a slight change) and thought it was incredible! Thx for sharing 🙂

  23. May 18, 2011 9:57 pm

MMMMMM your lunch sounds awesome!!!! im usually not hungry right after i run- but i am after i lift weights!

Nice post, I love your breakfast:) I could never skip breakfast, my day would be totally ruined:) Also I am unable to do any kind of exercise if I haven´t add some fuel for my body, so exercising on an empty stomach a big no-no for me 🙂

  25. May 18, 2011 11:05 pm

i LOVE WIAWS!! totally look forward to them now.

i’m not usually hungry right after I exercise, but about 30-60 min after, the hunger SUDDENLY kicks in and it kicks in BADLY!!!!! i totally get ya on the housework thing though – but it totally makes sense because that stuff requires tons of energy too, even if we’re not so aware of it! i remember when i was working on a farm, i spent all day crouching on the ground weeding and not really moving but would get SOOOO hungry afterwards

  26. May 18, 2011 11:06 pm

also, i wanna say again how GLAD i am that youre back blogging… i love your beautiful pictures and missed ’em for quite awhile!!

  27. May 19, 2011 1:22 am

Your eats ALWAYS look so YUMMYYYY!! Especially your oats. My oats tend not to look as appetising…perhaps coz I am lazy these days and no longer prepare them on the stove. Time is money, people! (slash, I spend that time on facebook *guilty*).

When I used to do intense exercise I was NEVER hungry. Apparently it’s because your body releases some kind of acid into the stomach which suppresses your appetite…I’m not quite sure about that. I could have just completely made it up but it’s convincing, no? Yet, when I go for my daily walks as I do these days or do some strength training I always feel really hungry!

And yes. I rather enjoy WIAWs 🙂

i LOVE UR WIAW!! your photos are so gorgeous and i love all the angles!!! im usually not hungry after i exercise.. esp when its a long run.. kills my appetite although sometimes i get rly hungry — changes a lot!

  29. May 19, 2011 3:58 am

Baah I ALWAYS lose my appetite post-exercise! I can run double digits and not want to eat for ages (though I always do eat, because I’m a smart runner :-D)
Egg white noodles? As in noodles made from egg whites? I’ve never heard of that before!

    • May 19, 2011 10:41 am

Actually I honestly have no idea why they call them egg white noodles, because they’re still made primarily from wheat… I guess it’s just the addition of the egg whites?

  30. May 19, 2011 5:36 am

Ahhh I’m in love with everything you ate!! I also agree on the pasta thing too – I’m not a fan and don’t keep it in the house but when I went to Italy it was TOTALLY different and quite amazing!! I’m intrigued by your egg white noodles too – never heard of them but they sound good!
Ohh and ever since I saw the cottage cheese and jam combo on bread on your blog, I am actually addicted! 🙂
It’s weird because I get hungry whilst I’m exercising and I think ‘okay just another 15 minutes more body and we can get food’ but then when I finish, I TOTALLY lose my appetite! I always make sure I refuel though because I was hungry before so I obviously need it..I get more hungry when I’m just doing housework or coursework too! Thank goodness for snacks 🙂

  31. May 19, 2011 6:09 am

I am usually hungrier before a workout. After it I am just not interested.

I really enjoy the WIAWs. I’ve always loved your pictures and WIAWs are a chance to see even more of them.

  32. May 19, 2011 6:17 am

I love seeing what everyone eats in the day; it’s great for getting ideas for different oat-bowls & snacks!
I’d do one of these, but I suck at remembering to photograph all my food before chowing it down! x

  33. May 19, 2011 6:56 am

I’m never hungry after I exercise! I just had that problem this morning! and I couldn’t help thinking well if I were to be following my “intuitive eating” that means I shouldn’t eat but I knew I had to refuel so I decided to just eat a bowl of oats!
I also can’t workout on an empty stomach. I have to have some kind of carbs inside of me 🙂

  34. May 19, 2011 7:17 am

I love WAIW’s. Some people don’t like them because they think bloggers eat too much or too little or because of the comparrison trap. But I think they are just fun! 😀
I am never hungry after a workout, I eat anyways because I know I need to though. It’s always the next day I’m ravenous. It’s weird.

  35. May 19, 2011 9:19 am

I’m loving the food combinations in this post! Hummus on top of pasta is going to happen in my life very soon. And so is cottage cheese on toast (or perhaps a gluten free waffle!).

I’m always hungry after weight workouts, but it usually takes an hour for my appetite to develop after a cardio sesh. When it develops, it comes on strong though!

    Happy Thursday!

  36. May 19, 2011 10:56 am

The same things happens with me! I’m usually not hungry after working out…but as soon as I have that first bite everything turns around 😉
All your food looks so GORGEOUS btw! The bowl of oats and your dinner stole my heart ♥

I’m SO excited to read more!

  37. May 19, 2011 10:57 am

I am usually not a fan of ats but those you have on here look delicious, how did you prepare them? I love WIAW now too this was my second week of blogging it.

I sometimes am not hungry after I workout at night if it was an extra hard workout I sometimes lose my appetite but when I exercise in the morning I am always hungry after.

  38. May 19, 2011 12:40 pm

Coming from someone who does work out on an empty stomach… I honestly believe that I’d perform better if I had carbs in me beforehand. However, I need at least two hours to digest, or I get horrible cramps, and I’m sorry, I am not about to start waking up at 3.30 or 4 AM for that!

    ❤ ❤

  39. May 19, 2011 2:51 pm

I LOVE WIAWs!! And yours is AWESOME!! 😀

I’m the same, I’m not hungry right after a workout, but I eat anyway and the hunger hits me like a steamtrain later! 😛

  40. May 19, 2011 4:23 pm

anytype of work or workout makes me hungry! haha =) That tea sounds sooo good! I kind of HAVE to try it! I’m always looking for a new one =) and all your meals look fabulous of course! ❤ I'm so glad you like WIAW! I love having ya! ❤ ❤

  41. May 19, 2011 7:24 pm

I HAVE to eat in the morning! Or I don’t funciton at all it’s horrible. I don’t get how some people manage to work out on an empty stomach in the morning… not judging, just totally not capable of doing so haha 🙂

Your eats are beuatiful and sooo delicious looking! 🙂
